450R triple clamps

Post by eyesky2002 »

Before I parked my 450R framed beast for the winter I was feeling the bars sat too high using the standard triple, stock bar mounts, 1 1/8" adapters and the high RC 1 1/8" bars.

Decided to get a new 1 1/8" top clamp or whole triple clamp package. Was eyeballing a Pro Taper set up. and am most likely gonna go the whole package...

Throw out some experience or opinion between the stock 24mm, the 22mm and the 20mm offsets.

Is your frame from a 2003 CRF450R (guessing from your sig)? I've heard from several people (including AJ) the '02 - '04 had geometry issues due to placement of the swingarm shaft. You can make the bike turn quicker by going to a 22 or 20 mm offset. My '02 wouldn't turn right on a MX track and I went with BRP clamps / 20 mm offset. Night and day difference on the track. To help with straight line stability, I also added a Scotts dampener. It really depends on the type of riding you prefer doing. The stock 24 mm would probably be fine if you do primarily straight line stuff like desert or sand riding. But if you ride tracks or tight woods, the 22 or 20 mm makes a noticeable difference.

I guess that leads to another question. Does the offset move the bottom of the forks closer to frame or further out? I currently have mm's between my front fender and pipe.

I did have to trim about 1/8th of an inch off of the bottom of my fender to clear the pipe springs. Can be done with a file but I used a Dremel like tool and you can't really tell it's modified.
