Sprocket changes... need to ajust links in chain?
ey there, I have a 1990 CR500 and since i bought it i have had it on 17s with a 15 ot 16 tooth up front and a 39 in the rear...
when i bought it it came with a full set of knobbies on stock rims and i think for the fall im going to set it up for mostly dirt riding... if i really want to do street riding a lot i can always swap back (its street legal) or ride my brothers CBR600...
so my question is: the stock rims have a 49 tooth rear and a 14 front with them how should I gear. 15/39 is too tall for riding in the woods i have done it on my 17s. if i go to 14/49 will i have enough chain? I could always go 14/39 and switch sprockets on the rear rims i assume that wouldnt be too big a change.
what is the margin that you can change the number of teeth without having to remove links from the chain cause i dont feel like doing that...

im almost done with college (christmas time) and have about 40 bucks to my name at the moment so i was trying to avoid getting another new chain i just bought one for the bike a month ago

eventually id like to get a second chain but like i said, i think i said it here i posted this question on a bunch of different sites, Im not done with school till december and im pretty much flat broke. glad i bought oil in bulk and have enough money to put gas in it at the moment so dropping 80 bones on a new chain isnt gonna happen. i gotta come around here more, ive been so concentrated on my new car lately ive just been riding bike as is, but today when i got home from a ride i pulled into the fields we own and went ripping through a few trails (yes with my 16/39 setup on 17s and pirelli tires) and although i lost traction when i snapped the throttle and in a 2 acre field i couldnt get above second I remembered how much fun a 2stroke is in the woods and off road... I havent had the knobbies on my bike since i bought it 3 years ago.
we have an RT180 trail bike (like an IT175) that is real mild and its fun to ride in the woods but nothing in power comparrison... I used to have a quadzilla thats why when i went supermoto i went 500

you aren't going to be able to string masterlinks togetheryou need the inner links too. you would be my savior... Ill have to check cause I didnt put the chain on I had it in with a bent shift shaft (last chain snapped but thankfully didnt crack the case) so while he was straitening my shift shaft for me (to save me money of needing a new one) he also put a new chain on for me... would it say on the chain anything about it or will i have to ask him?dannygraves wrote:you aren't going to be able to string masterlinks togetheryou need the inner links too. if its a DID, it will say on the side of the links. to check if its an x-ring, look for o-rings, if the see extra lines in them, its and x-ring. if it looks like a regular o-ring, then thats what it is. if there isn't either, its a standard chain. since they are different widths to accomidate the O or X ring it does make a difference.ctatv wrote:you would be my savior... I could be in luck... I got the rims out, unfortunatly I dont seem to see the 14 tooth sprocket but it might be laying around somewhere in my tool chest i didnt have time to check all the drawers, but it seems my rims included a 49+ which is on the rim and a 44... so if I went from 39 to 44 & 16 to 14 in the front that wouldnt be as drastic a change so i might be able to see if it fits...

really think so? I was getting it through the ocasional trail on 15/39 over the last year or two...TYSTYX wrote:14/44 will still be too tall for woods riding. If you have a 14/49 I would go with that if I were you.
BTW, i think its an O-ring chain...
on another side note, has anybody seen a grease fitting like that on a hub before? its only on my front rim...
