mmmmm bike woes

Post by ISBB »

Good News, Crank seals arent leaking.. Took out 800ml + of gear oil..

Bad News, Found a huge amount of shavings and much much larger than normal sized shavings. Guess its time to split the cases.

So DannyGraves.. i got the beer you bring the specialty tools and the instructions :P

You haven't taken anything apart lately have you? Like maybe you didn't put something together right. Just throughing this out there, but when my motor was originally assembled, the kickstarter gear was backwards. You know it's got a collar on one end, well the collar was turned towards the crank pushing the gear out farther. Far enough to chew on the rivets from the basket. Yeah imagine the look on my face during the first oil change  Looked like cottage cheese milk.

last things i did was motor came out of the frame frame got painted motor went back in... Started having issues since.. Overheated and blew off a coolant line off the head while in glamis.. came to the conclusion maybe a leaky crank seal was causing funky jetting and overheated it... so drain the oil and get a big ol mess of shavings... Ohh well.. I have been wanting to split the cases on one of these motors for a while now... now i have the excuse. :D

Im actually fearing the worse.. With the tranny acting up the last few rides.. I think its something in the trans. Was slippin in and out of gear a bit or missing shifts like the shift forks are bent.. usually only betweeen 2nd and 3rd or 3rd and 4th cant remember which. But when it slips motor winds up then all of a sudden it decides to drop back into gear with a nice THUD..

Sounds like a gear dog snapped off and smashed a bearing in the tranny, my old 87 motor did the same thing.

Bearing

Image

And weirdly the crank took a complete shit at the same time, there was a good 1-2mm of up and down play in it but the bike still started in 1-2 kicks, it just vibrated a little more than usual and compression was down.

I rode a whole weekend in dumont with the top end looking like this....

So to sum it up I had a bearing in the tranny coming apart, a gear trashed a wasted crank and a destroyed top end AND SHE WAS STILL RUNNIN TITS :D :D :D :D Gotta love hondas

I'm gonna be out of town this weekend, leaving sat.
Maybe we could do it one evening this week, or friday afternoon. The funny thing is this weekend, I'm going to be splitting Andy's cases to install the newer 4th and 5th gears and start on his gen-2, and hopefully tonight Marshall will be bringing by the stuff for his gen-4! I'm a busy guy!

so danny took apart my motor this morning.. and 2 of the gears are all pitted up and chewed up.. however the meshing gears on the countershaft are pretty much untouched and brand new looking.. We kinda scratched our heads for a while and came to the conclusion.

A) the cases have been swapped
b) someone blew up a previous tranny in this thing
c) someone used old parts thinking they would be fine and apparently arent

So all new seals and bearings and im crossing my finger that Mike over at TT has the 2 gears i need in that spare box of parts he has so it wont cost me an arm leg and my first born.. Those 2 gears cost at or above 60 bucks a pop.. UGG..

yeah, the stator side case has the sticker, so we know it has been replaced and some of the gears have the tooth # writted on the side of them in sharpie.
