As for the weight of the flywheel, i can tell you its noticably lighter. If i can borrow a flywheel puller this weekend, i'll take it off & weigh it for you.

i hear what your saying brotha and thnx for your info posted. im doubting '92 cr250 flywheel is the same as '01 and might not interchange on the stators but maybe they do. basically at this point in time, all im interested in knowing is the weight difference between '01 cr250 flywheel vs '92-'01 cr500 flywheelaloha450x wrote:look back 8 post and you will see the diferenc in weights100hp honda wrote:sweet man. did you find the whole system on ebay from a blown up bike or what ? was the stator machining easy for a machine shop or who did it ? definatly weigh the 250 and 500 flywheels because i wanted to know this answer for a long timeugly1171 wrote: I've just fitted this set up. you guys are looking at the weight thing all wrong...the 250 flywheels are smaller in diameter, so even if they weighed the same the 500 one would hold more inertia. I can see if my pot dealing buddy will let me use his scale and I could weigh the '03 flywheel.
In '97 the cr250 went to a digital ignition, so everything was redesigned... I highly doubt the old analog system will run the same flywheel, but I'd be willing to bet my '03 flywheel is the same. I will also measure the radius and see how much geometry, algebra and trig I remember and see if I can figure how the weight will make a difference.

yeah, one of the reasons I think the steahly weights are a stupid design, they should be shaped like an hour grass and thickest on the outer edges so you get as much inertia with as little additional rotating mass as possible.britincali wrote:dannygraves wrote:you guys are looking at the weight thing all wrong...the 250 flywheels are smaller in diameter, so even if they weighed the same the 500 one would hold more inertia..

the stealthy is also a thread bender, if its mass was hung by the center of its attatchment it wouldnt be as bad, but stealthy relied on the flywheel to center the weight, so any adjustment of the retaining screw actually creates an eccentric and possibly remainng vibrationless because of its dampering effect, still is on a missalignment that will at high rpm make the thread flex as the weight tries to centrifically true itself.
I'm considering if i want to use a weight in the '91 engine (had repaired the threads after removing the stealthy, but found it nice on the hillclimbing), that i would use a small od flywheel, and create a ring to buildup the o.d. of the flywheel to match factory 500 size, and rebuild the trigger pickup.

'86 is the only year that only requires a 250CDI, from '87+ all the 500s went to their own setup and the only part that can be used is the ignition coil. the flyhweel and stator has to be swapped to match the cdi.

I had to buy it all in stages, got the flywheel, stator plate & all the loom first. Brought a CDI from an (allegedly) 2001 cr 250. The cdi for the power jet carbs don't work without a PJ carb connected. (or maybe they do & i brought a faulty one) Finally got a non PJ CDI & i've got a spark at the plug.sweet man. did you find the whole system on ebay from a blown up bike or what ? was the stator machining easy for a machine shop or who did it ? definatly weigh the 250 and 500 flywheels because i wanted to know this answer for a long time
The 250 flywheel is smaller in diameter as stated elsewhere in this thread.
I machined the stator plate very carefully with a Bremmel.
I'll try & post some pics at the weekend. Oh yeah, the 250 ignition cover doesn't fit either! LOL

The second shows why you can't use a 250 flywheel with a 500 stator plate assembly.

I'm ashamed to say, due to a new job & other commitments, the bike is on the back burner at the minute so i've not ran it up yet, got to modify the fuel tank to clear the plug & cylinder head bracket. I just checked i had a spark at the plug.

It's a complete '94 CR250 ignition. The '94-'96 shared this equipment and now Honda has stopped production of the '93 system
so this ignition has replaced it as well. It's not digital like I had planned on, but I thought it would work well regardless. And for
the money can't complain if I don't like it...
