another tranny problem

Post by seanmx57 »

This is from a 97 motor. Guy that sold me the motor said it was fine.

I pulled the clutch cover. The basket looked good but moves up and down almost 1/4 inch.

Notice the lack of ball bearings on the cltuch shaft bearing and the crack coming from the other bearing.

Looks like the missing bearings got caught in the gears and that forced the journal cracking it...

Id be looking to get my money back!

it starts at the kicker, a backfire and you stop it with your boot or something along those lines, i see the tab that holds the kicker spindle is cracked too, all goes together, look on the outside of the lump where the kicker spindle pilots its likely cracked there too, ontop by the vent hose if the bearing crack went that far, and in the oil slot on the kicker spindle, think i sent this pic, but here ya go

its possible it was a backfire, those can break the whole assembly loose of the case. But what would have caused the bearing failure? Two different issues?

are the balls in with the oil or completely missing? No one misses ball bearings coming out with an oil change.

That's when they decide to sell it to some poor unsuspecting SOB.

I'm working it out will the seller. Found him on CL. He drained the oil a long time ago and had it for a spare. his boy was into cart racing and supposedly got recruited for nascar.

Fug,

That sucks.

A while ago, www.twostrokemotocross.com , posted a series on "ModerNifying", a CR 250. I think you can go there and access it still. It was along the lines of what might have been done by Honda , if their long standing policy and plan to stop ALL 2t production by 07 hadn't been in place ( I'm Always surprised how few people ever seemed to know of this / absorb this policy/plan by Honda, even journalists).

Amongst a lot of things, it showed welded reinforcements in the crank case, in lieu of the proper re-casting of the cases to overcome weak areas. Much of it was to cure known weakness' between bearings / at bearing landings. Of course, bearings/ gears carking it and wearing/ popping / cracking cases is going to happen on all engines, but nearly all engines have weak spots that can be addressed.

Has anyone ever posted details of what could be done, in terms of preventative maintenance, reinforcements, before the weak spots bite you in the arse, with the 500?

It's the sort of thing I'd like to address when I finally do a bottom end rebuild on my long suffering CRE. I'd value others opinions before I started to analyze deficiencies/ potential problems ( if no actual problems are found  ). The poor old engine has taken a monumental hammering in it's almost / just over, 500 hours. And it might have to take a fair few more hours / ks of abuse before it gets some love, the way things are going  .
