Fixing alcohol engine

Post by FRO53 »

Hi Glen,
I recently bought a cr 500 hillclimber on alcohol. I rode it a couple times and then tore it down to check it out. The piston was pretty beat up, and it looks like there is a crack in the exhaust bridge. The thing ran hard that way so i cant wait to get it going again. So my questions are. What should the clearances be when i bore it? and can i grind out the bridge like i have seen on your new stuff? And the piston had 2 windows in the back should i put them back?I dont know who ported it but its hogged out pretty good and it has a 44 mil lectron with packard float bowl and a fmf fatty. runs like shit with gnarly on.only has first gear so i run a 15/44 gear ratio.some people tell me to run a little nitro in it how much is safe? and how many hrs. should i be getting out of a piston? thanks and any advise on running alcohol woud be great. Sorry for all the question, just trying to learn everything i can

i was under the impression the slides were all the same but i dont know. might check into the pe7 or pe1 and see if they would work. 44L is too rich on your bike ? i thought it was a gas needle but maybe not

did your needle have a half moon notched at the bottom ? i cant imagine he gave you the wrong needle but it could be possible i guess. could be wrong but i dont think your supposed to run with the needle all the way out, better ask him about that too.

Yes its got the notch , and the needle all the way into the bowl. I can get it to clean out after running through 1st gear , I have the other jets opened all the way up and it seems like it starts to lean out though 4th into 5th gear.
the overide tranny works well its the 1st bike ive ever road that had one.
ive mixed up some 16:1 & 24:1 and I cant tell a differance this carb is just drounding this motor at low rpm

check out one of the qaudracer sites, they have stickys with lectron/alky tuning. sounds like your fairly close but just need alittle more fine tuning. your powerjets are probly open alittle too far. the one at 2'oclock postition is what you start leaning out first.
