Sealing pipe to silencer?

Post by Crow500 »

I can not seem to keep the rubber collar that goes in place at the junction together. If it lasts one ride, that is surprising. It seeems to be up against the airbox and just rips apart. What about using high temp silicone to seal it?

That's what I use, but it burns off eventually.

If you can find it, Chamber seal kicks ASS. hard to find though.

silicone and rubber things did NOT hold up on my air-cooled 300R trike. this shit was a one-time application. HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

I've used the black rtv, copper rtv and the chamber seal... All of which were burnt off after 10 min. Not everybody likes this method, but a bead of weld works wonders

You should check to make sure your pipe is mounted right. Of all of the 500's I've had, I've never had to replace that rubber boot. It shouldn't be contacting the air box

I think my sub frame is tweaked a little because the pipe is very close to the airbox. I tried the high temp silicone, but have not ridden since I put it on. I was just wondering if anyone had similar issues.

I use black high temp shit to join the pipe to the silencer, then I cut a piece of radiator hose and slide it over the junction w/ 2 hose clamps....the radiator hose turns hard as fuck from the heat....but it works

What's the point of running them? I didn't run one for years and never had any spooge coming out. I have never worn one out when I did run the stock rubber seal.

Thats true. It is good to have a mechanic in your pocket.

I didn't really have the spooge coming out of there, but I could tell exhaust was coming out and didn't know if that would kinda mess up back pressure or anything and make it lean like a crack farther up on the pipe.

As for welding it, when I was a kid my neighbor had a Honda 200 3 wheeler that kept tossing the chain, too stretched out, and he was trying to think of some way to keep it on. I almost had him convinced that if he welded the chain to the rear sprocket it would be fine. [/img][/flowplayer]

Looks like that kid may have had your 500 before you did (the brazed on master link that cost you a left engine case).. hahaha
