2nd gear won't slot with 2nd gear on the conter shaft

so i was cleaning out the inside of my case getting ready to put it all back together and i accidently knocked 2nd gear off the counter shaft.

so i busted out the haynes manual, installed the thrust washer between 4th and 2nd gear and to my surprise the slots in the back of 2nd gear won't fall into the dog's of 4th gear. when i remove the thrust washer it all fit perfectly but 2nd gear grinds against 4th gear idler sprocket and i know thats not right

so iam i right to leave the thrust washer between 2nd and 4th gear on the countershaft, and when i put the motor back together nothing is gonna screw up on me?

we figured it out, i wasn't linning the slots/dogs up properly
