stupid spocket ?

Post by powermizer »

Ok I went to pick up a 12 tooth sprocket yesterday, so I can play with gearing, and the guy told me your better to change rear than front, that it will be better through out speed where the smaller front one would realy only make a differance at slower speeds. gearing is gearing right!!!!. I can see that a smaller front sprocket would be less efecient than a larger one, but realy how much.

Why do you want to go that small up front?

12 doesnt sound like a good idea. 14/52 is a good combo if you want low gears

yea I would normally agree 100, but I dont have the money to go to the close ratio 4-5, and like I said I'm just playing right now to figure what I like. I'm going to try this thing out in the sand for the first time over uea if this crazy weather would be nice. I have ran a 12 tooth on my quadzilla without any noticable problems.

I ran a 12/48 on my 650 in the bush, run a 13/48 now with the dirt wheels and a 15/45 with the sm wheels. 1 tooth down on the front is the same as 3-4 teeth up on the rear. chain will wear somewhat faster with a smaller countershaft sprocket though. gears are gears.
13/52 - 4.0:1
13/50 - 3.84
14/48 - 3.42 - stock 650R and cr500 i think
14/52 - 3.71
12/48 - 4.0
13/48 - 3.69 - stock cr250

you get the idea. I personally wouldnt do a 12 tooth again, I was adjusting the chain ALOT.

The smaller the front sprocket, the more you try to drag the chain through the chain slider and the front of the swingarm, (more wear and damage)

Use a 14 or 15 on the front and adjust with the rear sprocket, that way there you won't wear out the front chain slider as quick, or wear into the swingarm.

Just a thought, my 2cs.

It seem no matter what your going to wear a chain guid or slider, more in front or back dpending where you change sprocket. So go with the largest front sprocket and the smallest rear sprocket and less wear and no fun unless your looking to go 140 mph.

I know, I wasn't trying to be a smart ass, it may have sounded that way. I just dont know what a happy medium is. LOL I have never understood what they mean by leave well enough alone. I guess thats why there is this great site, with many who know more than I. I am a sponge when it comes to performance in anything. Just learning from you guy's. It cost less for me that way. :D :D :D
