Square Tube Bending Die

Post by Morris500 »

I am in the process of making the engine cradle for a CR125/500 conversion. Here are some pics of my homemade square tubing bender die that I made from 1/4" steel plate and a cheapo HF pipe bender. The tubing is 1" square 0.125" wall 6061-T6 aluminum. The bend shown was just a test in the T6 tube to check for deformation. I am having the tube annealed back to the "0" condition before the actual bends are made. I debated filling the tube with sand to maintain the tubing shape, but found this wasn't necessary. This was a much, much cheaper alternative to buying a professional bender with the appropriate die. I also found that many of the professional square tubing dies have a "crusher" strip in the center that purposely collapses the wall along the inside of the bend. This would be unacceptable for a clean looking bend. I can provide a copy of the template for the bender die if anybody is interested.

You have to host them someplace like Photobucket, Tinypic etc and then link to this site.

Not sure if i agree with that Bob. Necessity is the mother of invention. Looks like a totally useable piece coming out his homeade jig.

Makes it a hell of a lot easier when it comes to doing your own conversion. If only SOF had shared his pics with us..... Minimal airbox/exhaust mods on a gen 4,would have been handy for me !

And yeah good work Morris !

It is very simple Juddy, SOF used duct tape, bailing wire and a little bit of rubber boot from wal-mart! Wouldn't have suprised me to hear he used JB weld to hold the cradle together because it was more cost effective than welding.

where is SOF? he got kicked out for not being able to post proof of his bikes right? Though i'm positive he was a for sure liar, i couldn't actually tell if he knew what he was talking about or if he was just totally full of shit...now i know he was, but on some issues he knew what he was talking about...the airbox mod of his is deffinately some of the corniest shit i've ever seen posted in this forum...oh well that's my 2 cents...

hello

i have exact same tube bender and i made bending die that looks almost same.

But i have huge problem. Tube snaps in 2 pieces before it was even 45 degrees bend. What i do wrong? I dont have sand inside tube when bending and trying to make inner radius 100mm. I bought mine tubes from roostius and those are 6061 tubing. Does anybody else have similar problem. I also make this bend very slowly. Also there was eye seen deformation at tube.
