LOL, I saw a car the other day here in vegas with a big sign for a brazilian ju jitsu studio in san clemente! HAHA, the driver was hammered. I was trying to pull up along side him to see if I knew him, but he was hauling ass in that little bimmer.

I'm a member of a fight house started here in Fort Walton Beach. Founded by two fellow Rangers. Silva and Mathis are the primary instructors. Both of them strangely look like nerds that anybody could take...
not the case!
But we train month by month. One month is Brazilian Ju Jitsu, next is Tae Kwon Doe and the following MMA. Ju Jitsu and Tae Kwon Doe are one packaged deal, they charge extra for the MMA.
What would you like to know? I'm not a martial arts god or anything, but I have been actively involved now for two years. Which in the martial arts community is like a blink of an eye...but I think having taken every hit known to man in the face qualifies me to answer a couple questions

Well given your background and experience, I don't expect to be trading tips and tricks with you for a some considerable time. I am taking a long-term view - 2 years to my 50th to be precise - and just trying to take it one step at a time improving my flexibility, strength, stamina, technique and strategy. Short-term I'd like to get some basic books or DVDs that I can study at home or when I am traveling, and a comprehensive stretching routine to loosen up my back and help me avoid getting tweaked.
I lucked into finding Gracie Barra in San Clemente looking for something active to do with my 13 year old daughter. We both love it, but she has an unhealthy liking for choking her dad out when allowed. My 8 year old is doing TKD right now which is good for his focus and attention, but I could see him in the Juniors class later on. I'd recommend it to anyone with a kid that's not already buried deep in another sport.

...she's only been 5 times so it's all attacks from the front. But she's fast and sneaky. And it's not from my side of the family.Exnav wrote:Mike....keep your chin downredrocket190 wrote:We both love it, but she has an unhealthy liking for choking her dad out when allowed.![]()

Here's a link to our website...and a picture of Silva in his gis.
http://www.capitaomma.com/bios.html
The guy who started it is Danny Capitao. I don't see much of him because he travels the country competing in tournaments and stuff.
I'm really just a scrub. The guys I train with...as with MOST among this community have done this their whole life. I just do it for the fun and experience. I don't care if I win or loose but obviously I prefer to win
But most of these guys don't sleep for a week if they don't win a fight. I've learned a lot about Japanese culture, matial arts history and have met a good numer of national and world wide competitors. I enjoy it.

I'm with you man, just trying to reverse nearly ten years of physical neglect. Somewhere between work, a divorce, re-marriage, and now an extended family I let things slide physically and now it's payback time. I'm only five weeks in, but I'm starting to shape up and have shed 6lbs. Mainly the change is mental, I have gone from being lazy to simply anticipating going to class even though I know it's going to be a tough.
Wednesday we had the privilege of a visit by Martin Rooney who trains NFL and college football teams as well as MMA fighters (http://www.trainingforwarriors.com) He has trained the Professor and swung by during a visit to SoCal as a personal favor. Well we got 1.5 hours of hell, but he was one of those guys that can just make you want to try a bit harder.
This is about 40 mins in and you can see what a good time I am having...

Do you guys train in Gis all the time? We do it month by month. One month we'll roll in gis then the next without. I'll admit we look like a bunch of sweaty fags wrestling each other in nothing but small shorts...but we actually learn some good practical moves for taking care of somebody who doesn't coincidentally happen to wear a gis around town. Very good cardio. There are days when I don't want to show up because my black eye hasn't gone away from the day or two prior.
