Another Non CR500 tech question...

Post by Travis »

Ok, my dad brought over a Golf Cart that he picked up cheap and wants me to fix it for him. It is a Mid 80's Yamaha 2stroke. The question I have is what would cause the thing not to start? It will run if you remove the plug and pour gas into the cylinder. After you get it started it will run again if you don't let it sit for very long. It runs kind of trashy which I think is in the Carb but the guy he got it from said they will do this when they need new rings. Saying the compression is not good enough to pull the fuel from the carb. I really doubt it since the thing runs ok after it starts. I may be wrong though. I am going to clean the carb out and see it that takes care of it but what do you guys think? Anyone ever fool with a Golf Cart?

Something in the fuel system is amiss..... motor is prolly' fine.

Does it have a fuel pump? I doubt the carb is gravity fed...

It surely has to have a fuel pump. It has one of those auto mixers for the oil too.

Then I would start there. Is it pumping?

also, what is the can tank made out of? is it steel? rusty? if it is, the rust flakes could be plugging stuff up.
you pull the carbs apart and clean thoroughly? take a needle to those pilot jets, they plug up with varnish very easily.

Plastic gas and oil tanks, it does have 2 or 3 fuel filters though, but I will try to get the Carb off tomorrow and see what is up. I will also try to find the fuel pump. It is surely pumping though because you can ride it as long as you want if you don't stop. Maybe not. I will take it apart tomorrow and have a look.

sounds like carb to me.
my pressure washer did that to me over the weekend. it didn't want to start unless I dumbed some fuel in and would only stay running if the throttle stayed up, if I let go of the trigger, it would die. took the carb out and cleaned, reinstalled, runs tits now
I had a yamaha sled motor with 2 seized rings and it would scream when you got on it, but it wouoldn't stay running with the air filters on. I tried everything, even different carbs. Then I did a compression test and found 90psi, which is pretty much the minimun that will compress enough to run.
always do a compression check

I didnt see this part originally.

If it starts hot, but not cold.... look at the choke, or enrichner... whatever it has....

Plugged filters?

Atleast plugged enough to not suck enough fuel to start?

Check the compression.
I am thinking that by pouring gas in the cylinder to start it, you are helping the rings to seal briefly

Ok, I have worked on this peice o crap all day. No improvement. I have cleaned the carb, had the reeds out, exhaust off, plug out, killed the batttery twice and got stranded twice. WTF is wrong with this thing.

Compression is 110 psi. I did not see any vacuum places on the thing, except the fuel pump runs off a vacuum. It is working fine. Seems like it is getting plenty of fuel but what kills me is that after it starts if you let it bog then you have to choke it a little for it to catch up. When it is wide open you can choke it and not tell a but of difference in the performance.

did you pull out the pilot jet and make sure you can see light through it. they usually get plugged and don't come unplugged without a fight. when I can't get one unplugged, I heat it until its red hot and blow compressed air through it. this burns off most of whats in there, then the air will help get out anything left behind. they are usually too small to get a needle though.

I was able to get the thing to start without primine it today and rode it a little but it did not have emough power to climg the hill in the yard. It takes spells where it will start and reun then will not. It has been getting fire the whole time. I think there is something up with the carb. I guess I will pull it back off and take another look.

I was really dreading pulling it apart. I have been told that I need a special tool to pull the pully and Clutch off the crank to get it apart. I looked and the thing doesn't have a Jug like a bike the case and jug are one piece. Or it appears that way.

those clutch pullers are universal, so when you get one it will work on all of those clutches (sled, odyssey, polaris, etc.)

Yeah the compression is 110 psi.

Pilot I have no idea. Just gave it a quick clean but everything looked pretty clean anyway. The Carb looks brand new as does the pump so I think the previous owner may have been trying this stuff to fix it already.

still, pull the pilot and make sure you can see day light through it. Trust me, 5 minutes and you can check one more possibility off the list.
