85 briken transmission

Post by xr680r »

I got my 85 CR500R engine split and was digging to find the problem. Turns out to be the gear all the way back at the case off the clutch shaft, number 14 I think it is, off the Microfiche on the transmission fiche. Lost a tooth and stopped the spinning motion that we all love so much. It this something I can be helped with off the site from someone who has spare parts or do I have to buy this from service Honda?

yeah, the '85 gears are different ad the main shaft is different. a complete '86 or '87 trans will drop right in, but I think you wound have to use a newer clutch basket because the bearings changed.
keep an eye out on ebey, I saw a complete '85 trans go for like $50 like a couple weeks ago. I don't know if honda will still have '85 gears

DO you know if even newer tranny would work if it was a complete change. It is nice to know I have a few other options.

if you just need 1 gear, it might still be available from honda....im not real sure on those older parts though. a whole tranny from a newer bike might work, im not sure

If you change to a newer transmission you will need to get a new clutch, and if you get an 89 or new clutch you will need to update the clutch cover too. As you can see it would be a pretty extensive project. My best suggestion is to wait for an 85 tranny to come up or the gear.

It just so happens that I will be rebuilding my 85 tranny with a new wide ratio kit, and I won't be needing that gear any more. If you can wait till the middle of next week and the rebuild works out I'll send it to you cheap.

just so you know, the '88+ uses a larger c/s than '87 and earlier, so those don't interchange.\
looks like its not much of a problem now though

I will take it......I have been waiting to see if I can make this work before I commit to that exhaust pipe of yours. I am not putting you off but, I don't think it would be a good idea for me to keep buying for this 85 engine if I am going to give up on it.....

I got this from Mr. Lewis who, I think got it from you? I am trying to put the 'Who's, Who" of the group together....

I am thinking better now, you guys are great. It is always a bad feeling at first when you split the case and find gear teeth wedged here amd there. I new it could be something bad but, always hoping......
Thanks for letting me know that you still have the axle, we thought maybe the kids misplaced it when they move the stuff after you droped it off. Let me know if you do get a chance to drop on by Teem Troubles place and can get that for me.

I am going to need the gasket set, the tranny gear and the time to throw it together. I am thinking of getting that other bike you told me about to put that engine in the 95 or get a newer engine with a wide ratio tranny. I will need the paper work for the 85 and maybe a fresh top end.

Do you have any idea on how I can get what I need for getting atleast one bike to run for PISMO?
I have two CR500's I was biulding but, they are not moving along, I ran into trouble with one and was going to get parts for the 85 engine. I hate it when everything stalls out. I will still be there at PISMO! I am working on lots of big things that will have fuses and should be seen and heard from a long way off. Power junkie! If you can't move across the ground....move the ground. My XR680R is in need of being rebiuld, I should have put my time and money into it, instead of waisting it on these two CR500R's. I bought Wheels, Steer damper, other forks......In the end I still need two engines for these CR500R's

Pismo is a awesome fun trip and I am suprised I come home each year.....

there was an '85 motor... cases and trans on ebay that sold for like $50 er something last week. just keep your eyes open.
FYI: '84-'87 and '93+ had wide ratio, '88-'92 was close ratio.

I still don't know what a Briken transmission is......one day I will learn to spell or at least read what I write

Jay called me he has been doing all kinds of stuff to help me get this bike going without me even knowing! What a great guy. I go to work (work 32 hours straight) and he calls to let me know that "Teemtrubble" donated the tranny parts! I bought a 94 motor off ebay
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayI ... 11876&rd=1

for the 95 bike and Jay and I are going to see how much of that bike we can slam together Saturday! I know it is out to .090 but, time is running out and I just hope it is a good motor. It will be nice to see if we can get both bikes going for Pismo. I my still bring the 680 but, it need to be ripped apart. Runs great but, the power is fading fast and you can hear the piston slap. It is hard not to ride a running bike but, I know when something is going to let go sooner or later and this is getting real close to now not just sooner.

It is awesome how much each other helps on this group!!!
