well i spoke to the man himself and this is what he said: there was progress on a modified caracal cylinder for a cr5, but the front stud location didnt match up well with the cylinder and was going to take major work to make things fit right....so that idea got put on the back burner as it wasnt a priority or necesity. so a new plan was hatched, nate is going out to calvins shop (the foundry that produces the saber and caracal cylinder), and their going to take the mold of either the saber or caracal and modify it slightly so its a bolt on deal, more or less. its hard to desribe this and have it make sense on a keyboard but i think you get the picture. as of right now i dont know how much interest there is in a aftermarket performance jug (i have alot of interest, but i know some of you guys probly wont) , but there will be atleast 1 cylinder made....and he said i have first dibs . if you guys want to try and spark more interest so all of us can get one then go on this site and speak your mind to get the ball rolling. i posted a thread under "two stroke technical"...."any cr500 guy?"

nothing is set in stone yet, as he is going to calvins to work it all out with him as to which cylinder is the better way to go. i forgot to ask him about a powervalved design, that may be a possibility but i dont know. customized port/head work would most likely be the responsibility of the customer...which meens you could send it to anybody you want. this is what nate was saying the options are, if i understood him correct and i hope i did

1- if they use the saber based design it will be 95mm piston, stock stroke, stock rod....more or less just bolt on and go

2- if they use the caracal based design ( it will be a monster ), it will be about 98mm piston, destroked 2mm with snomobile rod thats alot beefier than a cr500 rod, and i beleive he said will require case machining because of the rod.

I have a suggestion. Push the cr500 quad thing with him. Reason being there are a ton of drag racing quad guys out there that are desperate to beat fast banshees with a Honda motor. That's the angle that will get it built, not suggesting a few motorcycle riders are interested. The cr500 quad guys, and there are alot of them, will be interested in a bolt on jug that makes them faster.

i have always wanted to stick a 500 in a trx450 frame.. It looks like a good fit and should be a plush platform to ride..

I know a guy that put one into a trx frame and it cracked the frame to peices. So he had a custom frame built and used urathane mounts, and it works well. He raced that sucker on alky and smoked alot of bikes, but the 25 thousand dollar banshees where faster.

The problem with using a Cr 500 in a quad is there is np counterbalancer and a 4 pooint vehichle will shake itself to death. I know of people who have put a Cr5 in a quad and they told me vibs could and did crack the frame in places.

Needless to say just another reason why a bike with 2 points is totally superior.

Im just wondering if the newer TRX frames are better designed and supported for the bigger motors that they wouldnt crack as much. I know the older trx250's were prone for that and alot of people shy'd away from puttin a 500 in them.

Its just a thought.. Plus it would be fun in my opinion as i like riding both.

Actually in some way's they are better than a bike but I found most of the time people who like them have not mastered at all 2 wheeler.

The TRX guys already have a CPI cylinder that mates up and is designed for a TRX bottom end and performs well. Why would you want to put a CR 500 non counter balanced 500 CC motor in a quad? You probably have seen tons of these over the years but you haven't talked to them about how many times they had to weld the cracks in the frames, etc,etc. I have riden one of these in the past, even with a balanced crank and all I have to say is, IT SUCKED. It was fast, but can you say hand and feet numbing experience in a very short period of time.

A 500 CC single can compete CC vs CC of a twin cylinder of the same displacement. Matter fact, it can usually compete with twins that are of larger displacement to a point. I have come to realize with all the huge bore twins on the market now that a 500 cc single isn't going to compete with a 600 plus CC twin and that's what we are up aginist now.

There are so many cylinders now for the TRX bottom end that no one will do a CR 500 quad again.

I race a kart with a CR500 on it. In fact, the rules for the "Open" class are 550ccs or less, 430lbs with driver after a race and a spec right rear tire. As a general rule, the faster motors are stock stroke and real close to stock bore. That rules out the usefulness of this as far as kart racing in what I'm doing.

its really hard to beat a cr500 trans! I just split my cases and only have a couple marks on 2nd gear, all the other gears are tits! I hammer the shit out of the thing too and shift w/o the clutch most of the time... My clutch looks brand new and I've got over a year and a half of hammering that too!

most of the drag TRX guys run override trans and for some reason doing this mod to them helps their life. 2nd and 3rd gear on the countershaft are the only weak link and they have a billet 2nd-6th gear set you can buy. I still enjoy riding my TRX and am building one of Calvins Puma cylinders for the TRX (85 mm bore) and using this billet tranny.

I do admit the CR 500 does have a beefier tranny but it's designed for a 500. Still doesn't have a counter balancer though.

I've never had one idle on its own... partly due to not needing to, and not caring much. So warming the engine involves sitting in it with just enough throttle to keep it running. I've gone somewhat numb from the vibes, but thats probably no different than a bike and might be likened to a fairly vibey lawn mower.

I've shaken stuff loose before. Everything gets all metal locknuts with grade 8 bolts and changed out nearly every time it comes off. I use alot of red locktite too. For the most part tho, they aren't too bad while racing. I can't imagine it being a whole lot different than a bike in all reality. The cars see more abuse from the track being rough than they do the motor in my opinion... remember... no suspension. The axle is rigidly bolted to the chassis.

I've seen frames crack from the vibes, but not too terribly often. This is the 2nd year on this chassis and it has yet to see a welder for repair reasons.

More affordable (mainly the cranksaft) and this is going to be a duner on gas and I don't need 90 HP for this bike. They are having problems keeping the Sabers cool running gas and I don't want to have problems with it. This motor should be good for 75-80 HP on gas and that's plenty for what I'm going to do with it.

calvin was going to make one run with a stock Cr5 crank but he said it would be no where near as reiable as the super crank they sell. I blieve that one is out of A 900CC ARTIC CAT?
