7 degrees from vertical?

Post by 100hp honda »

seems every tom, dick and hairy is doing a conversion now a days, ive seen some shade tree conversions with the cylinder almost vertical- how important is it to have the motor at 7 degree off vertical ?

Dosent matter at all.... performance wise.

Swinging the motor clockwise ( when viewed from the right) does improve tank and shock clearance ( and other issues)

Swinging it counter clockwise improves coolant crossover hose clearance, frame clearance, raises the counter shaft slightly, improves airbox angle..etc..etc..

Its just prefrence.

on my gen-4s I'm gonna notch it and run the motor at the stock level. It just bugs me to see the "honda" on the clutch cover not sitting parallel to the lower frame rail, or the ground. Plus I want the tank clearance.

There are handling differences as well, that is why in 06 honda lowered the engine 10mm on the 450 CRF. If you lower the engine it helps bite but it will not float the front end over obstacles as well. When Honda lowered the engine in the CRF 2006 model they were conceding the fact the gen 4 had issues with front end bite.

X2 it's about the clearance's and fit in regards to conversions.

Old Style "Upright" chassis

Image
Modern "Laydown" Chassis"

Slightly more than 10mm motor offset.

Does it handle differently? Yea... the C/G is allot lower.

Does it handle remarkably differently..... no.

In any given Honda chassis, you proably dont have 10mm to swing in either direction... there just isnt the room.

That is the thing that makes a 06 CRF 450 and latter are more desirable it has a 10 mm lower crank enertia to make bike feel lighter. The bike will feel lighter in side to side motion if the crank is lower and at the same time it helps plant the front better but as I stated there is a difference in the way the bike will float the front end over whoops. This was told to me by Frank Thomas who sets up Jason Thomas's bike. The pro's play with all this stuff trying to get the best combo for a track.

And so did in 08. Finally Honda put offset trip clamps on, but 2mm is not enough for me. From 24 to 20 is a big dif. 08's are 22.

The bike will turn tightern at the exspence of front end stability. I like the 20mm on my 2003 CRF but do not like them on the 05 CRF.
