I picked up an 01 CR250 motor last year for a pretty good deal. I was planning on putting it in a gen 4 chassis but went a different direction for now. I really liked the 04 CR250 I had for a track bike but hated the case reed engine. So here it is with the 01 motor after it went to Eric Gore for his new 295 kit. Started on the first kick this morning but I have yet to ride it. Everything lined up real easy and all I had to do was a new headstay and relocate the hole in the front motor mount. 01 right radiator and pipe and it's good to go.
I have my gen 4 crf250/cr250 mocked up, that clutch side frame rail was a hassel, i made it work and my motor is clocked farther foward than SH cr250. the rest of the conversion is just like doing a 500 afc.
Hey Mik - So how does this motor run? I am debating on the same thing.
I came home and found that my kid did the same conversion. He managed to shoe-horn it in the stock mounts. Kicker hits the frame on full kick And he spaced out the right rad temporarily. Did your 01 exhaust bolt right up?
The CR500 is an acquired taste. If you don't like it, acquire some taste...
I just got it back from Eric, the head was leaking. I have not had time to put it back together. I used a new 01 FMF pipe and the 04 silencer, bolted up just fine. I didn't ride it much and it ran like crap so I can't comment on how it's going to ride yet.

Head leaked again so it looks like the 295 is not gonna happen. Eric is trading me out for his proven 265 cylinder so hopefully that one works. Cool guy and backs up his stuff so far.

A nice flat head surface on the cylinder and head, a copper head gasket and an o-ringed head and you wouldn't have any leaks. I have a trx 250r with a stock jug big bore sleeve pressed in and it's critical to have all sides flat and the use of copper gasket and o- ringed head to have 100 % head seal
Was there alot of material left in the sleeve area once the cylinder was bore to 72 mm? The power is probably pretty go I would think
The 265 is back and together. It's sounds a hell of a lot better too, the 295 had some weird noise and I could not figure out if it was the power valve or ? I only rode it in the yard but can tell its got a little less torque and mid range, but it's gonna be way better than that case reed POS. I will hit the track when I get back from this trip I'm on now.

It ran good but I got a decent offer on it and let it go. Kinda wanted a new 450 so I had to thin the heard a little before bringing another bike home.
I dont see how 15CC's would make much of a difference in how something like this ran anyways. Now, the changes in the porting that would surely be accompanying the displacement change I can see making a world of difference in how the bike runs. Would be interesting to see what difference just the porting would make, and just the displacement increase would make.
