Parts options

Post by moto863 »

I have an 88 motor that has a bad clucth basket. Can I install a newer side cover so I can install a newer basket? If I can, what other parts do I need to replace to make the new basket work?

Why not just buy a new 88 clutch basket?
Honda Parts Direct has them for $175.32 OEM part # 22100-ML3-910 and that is with the gear.

I was told by my dealer that the parts were no longer available. Guess I should have done some good old fashoined Internet searching to confirm.

to answer your question, to do the upgrade, you need the side cover (the small clutch cover and waterpump cover and parts are all the same) clutch basket, inner hub, clutch discs, t/o pushrod and bearing. the outside plate, screws and springs can all be reused. Be aware that some of the honda dealers have started sending the new parts when you order the old ones.

I just discovered that when I bought my clutch basket that I got the new style basket that is about a i/4 inch deeper than my old one (how the hell I didn't notice that when I was comparing the two I never know)
But anyways I will now be getting a new side cover for what looks to be $128.70 at HPD also a new clutch rod for $11.19.
While I am at it I am going to get a new water pump shaft, seals and bearing.

Danny are you sure the the small clutch cover and water pump cover are the same because HPD shows different part# for an 88 to a 95 (which is what I am looking up).

yes, they are the same, or atleast will work. make sure you also get the t/o bearing.
I've got 2 '86 waterpump covers and they both fit on my '93 side cover. I think the PNs changed because they used a different material.
I seem to remember a difference with the dowels, like the newer ones are longer or something, but they will interchange.

for the t/o bearing are you talking about the one the clutch basket rides on or the little ball bearing at the end of the rod or ?

Thanks

I might just forgo all of this and just buy an aftermarket clutch basket like a Hinson

I don't think you will find the old one aftermarket either. the bearing at the end of the rod...the "throw out bearing"

Cool thanks Danny

Couple more questions though do I need the rod itself?
part # 22851-HA2-670 for a 95
#22851-KA5-740 for an 88
and what about the clip #13115-147-000
and Washer #90608-072-000
Do I need these also?

I ended up just getting a Hinson basket from Dennis Kirk

Decided why buy all those other parts when mine were still good.
