j/k, yeah, I had issues, like I could read and write from a very young age, but struggled with reading out loud because I would read words in the wrong order.
My wife says it has to do with one side of the brain dominating over another. shes the opposite of me, very well read, can write great and master of jeopardy, but when I was building a wall in my house and had to figure out some weird angles, she was clueless. My older boy Seth totally takes after me, absolutely no interest in art, or writing, but he can play with his legos for hours! I left a screwdriver out the other day and he took half of his toys apart in like 20 minutes.

Studies show that studies can be manipulated to show whatever the hell they want to show.

What a total copout. I'm sorry, I don't buy it.

It's all about motivation and interest. If you truly want to do something, you will apply yourself in an appropriate manner until you excel at it. If you don't, you won't. Simple as that.

People who can't spell simply never cared enough about it to apply themselves to learning how.

I work with more than a few, very smart and very logical electrical controls engineers who can't spell for shit and can't do anything mechanical to save their lives. I'm not saying there is no relation between the two, but I really don't believe it is significant.

In fact, the only guys around here who can spell worth a damn are also much better mechanics. Maybe because they actually know how to read the manual.

readind and writing are completely different. I can read blueprits ans schematics like nobodys business and apply them with ease. dosent mean I can spell schematics. see the difference.

I get your point Mojo, but I can tell you I worked VERY hard on my writing skills, both handwriting and structure. I forced myself into advanced composition class and AP english classes in highschool and I did see a drastic improvement. What I found though was my own nature went against it, I had a very difficult time with creative writing and wanted to write my letters like an alarm clock display. I'm very left brained. I was in pre-calc my junior year even though I barely showed up to trig the year before (I did well on the final) but struggled in lit class. the funny thing is I can read a technical manual no problem and retain everything I read, but no matter how many damn times I try to read "the cat in the hat" I struggle my whole way through sounding out each work like a 1st grader.

Yeah, and I'm saying it is more likely because you simply were / are not truly interested.

"I forced myself" = not really interested but knew it would make you a better person.

"can read technical manuals and retain" = you don't think that has everything to do with what captures your interest

"struggle with cat in the hat" = what doesn't capture your interest

This thread IS in the politics and activism group. I think it's pretty much fair game.
