i ordered 1 took 9mths to get, they sent me the wrong finish on the chamber, i kept the silencer that is about as long as a CRE only to find it is not compatible with any other chamber, it is 10mm to short at the join & JUST sits flush with any chamber...
i then thry'd an FMF & PC that fitted perfect to the OEM chamber...buyer beware....the UK mob is excelent at comunication BUT you have to buy via there distributer that in this case is John Titman Racing, there an Aussie bike shop supply.
Ive got a brand new silencer if you wanna buy it.

If it is in line with the chamber end and only 10mm too short just get a section of 1 3/8" (34.9mm OD) tube , probably a 30mm length at the most. If it's got a seam on the ID, machine the seam down so it has 11/4" (31.8mm) ID, then machine (you could even just use a linisher or grinding wheel - and just a round file to remove the internal weld seam) the short section of the OD that slips over and into the chamber end to , roughly, 33.9mm. With the resulting adaptor the muffler would fit, if the problem is as I've read it.asteroid500 wrote:i ordered 1 took 9mths to get, they sent me the wrong finish on the chamber, i kept the silencer that is about as long as a CRE only to find it is not compatible with any other chamber, it is 10mm to short at the join & JUST sits flush with any chamber...

1 3/8" OD exh. pipe tube from a muffler shop you'll find will generally have 31.8mm ID as it's 16 gauge =1.6mm thick.
It certainly sucks to find a problem, and I'd be royally pissed at waiting that length of time to only have the wrong chamber sent, but , you've done an AF, you race various machines, and I assume work on them - a few minutes work and you should have a usable muffler. I'm not being a smart arse, as I have done the " useless effing bastards" thing many times myself, and tucked bits into a corner, to then just calm down and realize it can be easily salvaged.

Your missing the point....you dont pay $780.00 dollars then have to modify it...this system was meant to be a strait bolt on AF-500 exhaust system

Not missing the point, hence my saying I'd be royally pissed off at it.
But I would have enquired if the muffler / pipe were interchangeable with stock systems - plenty of manufacturers , especially the Poms and Euros, make things so they only take their matching parts. As you say, it was meant to be a system - a system is just that, a system that goes together. You'll rarely find many manufacturers 'systems' for a specific bike, being able to match up with another manufacturers 'system'. That's where they would absolve themselves with regards to non fitment to other systems.
If they had told you that you could mix and match components, you would have had cause to be seriously, and absolutely, pissed off.
DEP make great pipes and silencers, but , from my experience, really do the 'system' thing as much as they possibly can. I daresay to catch people up in the sales loop.
Caveat Emptor.
I have to say, with the amount of AFs out there, a company stating they have AF suitable pipe combos are brave, as there will be a considerable difference between many conversions. Perhaps they have a covering letter / pamphlet dealing with this, perhaps the std mid mounts slotted alloy plate has enough fudge factor in the slot, perhaps ( more than likely) having to do something as inconsequential as modifying / fabricating an adaptor is the least of concerns with an AF build up, for those doing one. And I've seen a lot of different takes on muffler mounting points...........
I've never used an 'AF specific 'pipe for any AFs I've done, just moved mounts, cut and shut, made adaptors if needed.

If I were doing an AF I would make the bike to fit the exhaust. If you have to mod the exhaust then everytime it gets banged up and you replace it you have to mod the thing again...

I'm for doing an AF properly. Admittedly , properly, only by my definition.
I have definite opinions about the placement of the motor with regards to the swing arm and counter shaft positions - that's what I work to. Others have opinions about working to the ancillaries. They do it the way they want, it's fine by me. I make the ancillaries fit my motor positioning - to me it's easily done.
I've only ever really had to do the most minimal mods to the mid mount, if at all. I generally , if needed, just make a new version of the alloy plate mount that takes the rubber insert. Sometimes I tweak the pipe with a jig that holds the header manifold exactly in its position with relation to the barrel, to match up to the silencer, if needed. But often , that is only required because of hits / repairs the pipe has already been subjected to, I find.
It's as easy as that. Compared to making an AF, which is not rocket science itself, very slightly modifying a pipe or making custom brackets is a no brainer. With muffler mounting, either adaptor brackets / spacers , or a new mount on the sub frame to suite the muffler is what I do. If spacers are required , I like to attach them to the frame / sub frame /bracket so you don't misplace them. I think I've only ever done AFs with the std pipe, Pro Circuit, DEP , Dorma,SPES and once, an Italian one, who's name escapes me (HGS?). Never, strangely, have I got near a FMF Gnarly. That's strange, as it seems every second bloke has a Gnarly, and, from what a mate who works at the OZ distributor says, the FMF Gnarly for the CR500 has been one of their biggest selling 2 stroke pipes for many years.
