rod and main bearings

I'm thinking about buying a bike 97 CR500. the owner told me that the motor siezed 2X.
First was from a hose leaking all the coolant out. The second was cause he put the piston in backwards. After that he had a shop rebuild it. Does overheating a motor hurt rod or main bearings?

thanks, I didn't think so either but fugured I should ask before taking the drive to look her over, I'm strongly considering making a gen 2 or 3 woods bike. My current motor is too much, need a stocker.

ya I know, I got 4 gen 2's chasiss and a but load of gen 2 parts, I am not looking to win woods races just give myself some variety. I gotta see if there is a way to make the 2 turn a bit better other than slding the forks up in the tripples and running the rear wheel foward.

Well, I guess I will be the voice of caution here........heat is your friend....to a point.

if you lost coolant long enough to squeeze a piston, there had to be a hell of a lot of heat.

(most california guys know that we boil these things in the summer on the regular, with no problems).

If that motor were mine, I would be taking a long look at the rod bearings, wrist pin bearings, crank bearings.

the cr500 can take A LOT of heat abuse before it seizes, so I would raise an eyebrow at heat seizure.....

the piston beeing in backwards made it lean, made it hot, not cooling system or anything could have saved it from beeing lean, dads run the '00 out of coolant from tearing a hose on a tree, and rode home 5 miles so the vertex piston was blue hot, put a ring,pin,pin brg in it and its stil going

the 500 motor is a tough SOB. I doubt the overheating would have hurt anything other than the piston. dirt and/or lack of lubrication is what kills bearings.

gen-2 makes a fine bike, if you already have a chassis and a ton of spare parts, I say go for it.

overheating shouldnt affect the lower bearing at all.... possibly the top bearing but honestly i doubt it. if your concearned then put new wrsit pin bearing and ride it.
