I can't answer that yet but, were working on it and have a few things in the works. I have a zero hour GEN4 chassis here and a zero hour CR500 motor and will be selling the GEN4 4-stroke motor, carb, electronics and pipe. Then I'll have a pretty good idea what I can sell the completed conversion for. As for apples to apples comparison that won't be possible until I own a dealership and sell "new" bikes wouldn't you say.

Well since one of SH's big selling points is that the motors are new new, and all other A/F bikes are using used motors, you can't do a Apples to apples comparison. Now most of us now that you can take a good condition cr500 motor and rebuild it to like new, but for the customers that buy a SH bike, they feel a brand new motor is somehow superior, when it just isn't. I don't think there is one motor part that can't be purchased new from Honda, therefore a cr500 motor can be built to be new down to the last screw.

ported.

All the parts build a new CR500 engine run about $3400
(most people will pay far more if buying all the parts)

a new bike costs how much? (.donor )
now add in pipe silencer and all parts you need to do theconcversion (new)

you are at 9 K real fast .
but you can sell th eengine and a few pieces..
(covers the cost of fabrication/building)

either way-
if you want a new bike, ,
or to rebuild an older bike and older engine to truly new status, you
are going to spend some change.

can a used bike ,simply refurbished, be as good peforming ,
as a brand stanking new one?
and done at less expense??

absolutely.
(and i can buuild them reasonably as well, and do)

some people want a NEW bike, a brand new one,.
its just that simple.
there are sound reasons for that as well.

yiour argumanet could b estated fo ranyone buying a brand new CRF450 as well?
as they could buy a used one, the parts are readily availble to refurbish it right up!
but noone would dog them for deciding to buy a brand new one either.

like bob said,
its good to have choices?

Note the many different plains that the pieces join on. There is not one single "Butt" joint to be seen. The loads are distributed out , and not concentrated at any one connection.

Mik329 WROTE; "This is just plain bitchin! Anyone know if this guy will do another one or at least sell the "Y"?

I first saw this picture before this site even started and had no idea where or who made it.
Then I saw on "THE OTHER SITE" where one bloke thinks a fab shop in Australia had made it. Then this Clown pipes up and states it was done in New Zealand.

Bloke: 1, Clown: 0, you were wrong.

After almost 3 years I have finally made contact with the bloke that performs the work of Art, He is in fact an Aussie.
Michael has built 6 of these things, the one in the photo was built in early 2003 and I have 2 other photos dated 8 / 21 / 2003

Michael's shop is in Alice Springs, Northern Territory, Australia

To answer Mik329 question, will he build another is a BIG YES! Mine will be his next one. He uses a double headstay, but the Rads have to be Modified to clear the Y.
He said he would like to change the design so the standard Rads can be used.

I only got a short call with him as a customer came in, when I get more details I will post them for you guys.

 If you are refering to me, I was looking for that bloke before this thread was even an idea in anyones mind.

I thought it might be of some use to the Aussies who want to build an AF, knowing it is done in Australia.

I did not see any sense in posting anything about this until I had made contact with this bloke, beside I wasn't even a member when this thread started.

Mik329 have you caught my new movie, it is called FORWARD TO THE PAST.
