going to dunes-few questions about rim/tires

Post by 484 »

OK next month going to dunes to put the 500 in it's proper element.(NOT doing block long wheelies for neighbors  ) I was looking to pick up spare rim to keep a paddle mounted on it. 1. what years and models interchange with my bike(1996)? Should I stay with 18" for the paddle rim? 2. are the cheapy cheng shin $40 paddles junk or what? WHat would be a decent brand 10 paddle for me? And what is a good width? 3. Are all CR sprockets from the last several years interchangeable? I don't really trust the parts guys.
thanks!

I use an AMS Sand Snake on a 18" rim. 10 cup jobber. Its easier to find 10 cup paddles with more variety on a 19" rim. BUT a 10 blad will do just fine and will work on an 18.

good luck finding a chengshin for $40. theyre more like $80 with shipping. cr80 chengshin is $40+shipping :D . for used rim and new paddle youll be looking at probly $200 unless you got inside connections.........if you only visit the dunes 2-3 times a year your better off just swapping tires on the same rim IMO. if you plan to hit the dunes 10 times a year then its worth it to have the extra rim. just suggestions before you blow all your cash.

an '87-'01 cr500 or 250 wheel will fit. '97-'99 cr250 will also, but thats a 19" and has a larger brake rotor.
the brake rotor changed in '90 so the older wheels have a 6 bolt rotor, but its the same size, so the wheel will still bolt on.
get a skat track tire.

thanks guys. yeah I'm thinking I may just swap the paddle on when I hit the dunes. around here it is 3 hrs to get to the sand so can't see going too often. Especially as the tire on it now is junk so that saves me taking a good one off at least. I'm still in the 45 minutes-and-alot-o-cussing stage of tire swapping.
was I right about the sprockets?
