mugen piston ring

Post by kelroy_leon »

hey,
anyone know if theres any companies that are offering a steel piston ring for the mugen top end ? the bore is still in great shape but it is chrome plated. or, if theres anyone out there with a ring or two ? any info would be appreciated.

so far i have had no luck. wiseco no longer makes the iron ring that i need. american power sports didnt have anything, im running out of options. can anyone else think of a place that might make an iron ring for a 54mm bore ?
thanks

stock style rings in 54mm are like the 94-08 yz125, 1977-07 rm125, 2001-06 ktm125sx, kx125 1992-08

the ring sets are different, some are likely dykes rings, should be something that'll work, all wiseco #2126 with cs cd or cst behind it

Did Mugen use the same ring as the 79 CR125 Honda or Honda used the same type as what you are after.

If so I think I can get what you are after.

What year Mugen are we talking about in case there is a difference.

i havent checked to see if the 85'-86' cr125 ring is the same as any others from honda. the mugen kit used the factory honda piston. mine is stock 54mm bore, im gonna run an 86' piston with the single ring. 85' had dual rings if i recall correctly ?

here is what i have so far:
84' cr125 =55.5mm
83 55.5mm
82 55.5mm
81 55.5mm
80 55.5mm
79 56mm <for chrome bore>
78 56mm

a ring for a 2001 yz125 is 54mm but wiseco lists it as a hard coat anodize. can that be run in a chrome bore ? i wish i could run a 79' cr ring but its 2mm too big. file it, check the end gap, run it ? i dont think id risk it with the mugen top end. would the extra bore diameter and then being stuffed in a 54mm bore put extra stress on the ring and more wear on the cylinder? my bro had his original one bored and replated to a 133 i think. 500's are more user friendly.

92'-02' kx 125 had a Electrofusion Bore. ?? in 03' they ran nikasil. it seems that the majority of early bikes ran no plated bores? was chrome cutting edge technology at the time, is that why so few used it ?

I didn't realise Honda change their bore size that much. :?

A pity they did that, otherwise you could of used 79 rings for the job.
