engine coatings
engine coatings
I'm rebuilding a 91 motor and I want it to be really reliable since I race the usra desert series. and don't want to rebuild it very often. I wouldn't mind getting better performance but my main goal is reliability. so I was thing of using some coatings. any other advice would be great.
Have any of you guys used any engine coatings ?

I fabbed up several Chevy V8 twin turbo systems the last few years.
I'm in the process of building a TT/BB 461 for my Camaro. I had my pistons thermal and dry film coated.....I'll eventually have the chambers, runners and valves coated as well.
I side-lined the Camaro to get my bikes in order. I did send the piston and head for the 500 out for thermal and film coatings.
Having less heat absorbed into the engine and expelling more out through the exhaust is a win/win situtation.
Dry filming the skirts takes reliability one step farther.
I have always believed in coatings but I don't personally know of anyone else that does it. The racers/hot rodders around here wouldn't even think of the idea.
Get drunk and slap parts together....yes.
Think up precision and high-teck shit...no way.
The place I use is just a day away....on UPS.

I've never tried castor oil. I've heard stories form the old racers on how they are addicted to the smell and how good it is.
My first oil burner was a 79 Elsie, the first oil I burnt was MC1.
My first modern bikmewas an 83 CR250, I ran the MC1 at 32:1....which is waht Honda recommended. It blubbered and smokes so bad that I couldn't stand to ride it. So I slowly leaned down the mix, and at 50:1 (BR's recomended ratio) it came to life and smoke was minimal.
I got away from MX bikes for 20+ years, and the old MC1 craving krept up on me. That's when I scored the 480. Lucas 2stroke was the only oil available for the first ride. I couldn't stand the shit....I needed MC1.
The first time I took a whif of that smoke all the old memories came back.
So yeah, I can relate to MC1, that's all I've ever used.
As for tranny oil.....it's either Mystik or Rotella.

Mate of mine had a YZ250J loved MC1 ran it at 55:1 and also used belray gear saver.
Never had any problems.

That being said, could it have been the coatings that saved my motor last fall during a race when my water pump seal shit the bed and I pissed all my coolant out until I was dry, finishing the race oblivious to the fact? Maybe.

I have used coatings for a few years here and there with mixed results. Currently, I have my Fo Fitty 13:1 dome heat reject coated and the skirt friction coated. If this top end lasts (3+ years/4-8 hundred hours) like the OEM did then ill let you know how it worked in a few years.
I had my dad coat a header on my sis's qwad to keep heat down (runs next to her leg) but it burned off after a few rides. Same place did the header that has done our coatings for the last few years, not sure why it failed.
There isn't any design issues with the 500 (besides the cast piston cracking that any not so well upkept motor could suffer from). The thing with coatings is they really wont hurt much even if they dont improve anything so if you are willing to put up the cash do it.
