Black engine housing. Untill what year?

Post by sonic22 »

hello

could somebody tell me until what year did Honda produced the Cr 500 engine with black engine housings (carters)

was it until 1993?

and in any case can this engine be from a 1996 model?

Image

thank you!

p.s. don't worry about the frame... it is on a home made quad bike.

i dont want to say for sure, but it looks like its 87-88, theres a differencein case deck height, but it appears that its tall deck (87-01)
the jug dictates 85-88
and the chain guard looks 88ish
if you could see the other side and tell if its got a removeable 6 bolt clutch cover or a 1 piece clutch case would be easier

what if it has (or does not have) a removable clutch cover? witch is witch?
no i have not seen the other side yet.

thank you!

by the way
the site below
http://www.cyclechaos.com/wiki/Honda_CR500#1996
is a very good reference guide to tell what year is what, provided you know the bikes serial number.[/url]

ya, if there was a hosting of bike pictures year by year and seperate cat for modified stuff it'd be easier to identify things for sure. If i had any kind of upload speed worth talking about i'd skydrive the stuff
didnt mean to rib ya on that site, i've been there before too, there was another one before that had lots more, i think it was a member that made a pdf of similar descriptions

Yes, if I'm not mistaken, the 1993 was the last CR500 to have black cases. I know for sure that my 1994 had silver cases.

i thought the engine staid the same for most of the '90ies now i see that after the 85 model all Cr 500 had reed valves, flat slide carbs and bore-stroke dimensions of 89x79 (and all produced the same Hp)?

could somebody enlighten me about the motor differences?

p.s. seriously guys you just saved me from a lot of trouble...
the first engine is advertised as a 96!!
and the second as a 92!!
and from what i hear they are both 86-88ers!!!

theyre both 87-88s, they both have a rod length thats the same 87-01 instead of the short 85-86 cuz the cases have a visable 1/4" or so wide flange where they meet the jug.

So the engine from 87 up until 01 staid EXACTLY the same?
So i would not have any problem finding parts?
So i should buy one if it runs good? :)
