Wheelies

Post by CR500PHIL »

I tried my CR500 AF the other to see in what gears it would lift the tire without pulling on the bars. I got it up in first and second only - about the same as my YZ250. This is a fresh 91mm bore with lots of compression, new vForce reeds etc. How does this compare to the bikes you guys drive? My bike does have a FWW which is coming off this weekend.

1-2-3-4-5 on my '88(13/50 milville) and af(14/51 milville) 1-2-3 on '87(14/49+giant desert tire) +'00(14/51 extended w/teraflex)

this is on DIRT, not sand, sod, road, but black dirt that you can leave a footprint in

Is this just like a pinn it type thing or are you trying to wheelie it with out pulling on the bars?

I am sure if you chopped the throttle at the right moment and punched it, the bike would come up in most gears, maybe not 5th.

I pull 1-3 all the time...sometimes 4th and even 5th - have to crest a hill for that to happen tho. My AF is 14/47

With a FWW, absolutely normal. Right where you shoud be. I think pulling the bars is silly anyways, but without the clutch you aren't going to see 4th or 5th with a FWW on a stock motor. If you can wheelie in 5th without the clutch...you just plain geared LOW AS FUCK! Without the clutch, in regards to power wheelies alone my bike is geared 14/49 and will loft the front end in as high as 3rd. 4th and 5th require the clutch and a generous amount of throttle.
Before the 250 ignition the bike wouldn't wheelie in 5th without help from the ground like hoofarted said.

 i run the 14/51 cuz its usually tight trails, fallen trees, creeks and scrub til the nearest hill. I'd ran a 15/48 on that '88 bike before and it was absolutely useless off the field

im running a ported polished 01 motor with an 86 head, Vfrce3 and PC pipe. If i catch it on the pipe in any gear, even 5th it comes right up. no clutch. i am geared 14/48. the key is to hammer it right as its coming on the pipe and it should be no problem. My brother has an 06 yz 250 and when dragging i always seem to pass him on one wheel.

Funny we both settled at the same ratio's. I tried so many different combinations, when its geared to low the bike becomes uncontrollable when it comes on power and when geared to tall the "hit" is too pronounced and you have to ride either below or above the hit to be smooth. Great minds think as one LOL

I went over backwards in 5'th once on a ported good running 86 CR125 without the clutch. I'm pretty sure I yanked the bars a bit but once it came on, it came on hard and looped me real quick. I had no time to hit the brake and just threw the bike. I came down on my hands and knees. I was wearing a helmet and shorts. It was gruesome. I had to cut a chuck of meat off my knee. My hands were pretty bad too. That wised me up about wearing gear.

This is a stupid thread everyone knows 500's won't do wheelies. :itsok:
