Any landscape experts here?

I have 14 white pine, plum and cherry trees that I am going to mulch around in my yard. I have dug the ring around each tree already. Should I put down landscape fiber to act as a barrier to weeds, or just put down the mulch?

Of all of the yard work we do around here, I am always removing that stuff. It will block the weeds from below but they will grow from the top downand imbed themselves in that shit unless you relentlessly weed around your trees. Then you have a huge mess and it is also a real pain in the ass if you ever need to dig where you put it.

that weed mat is garbage......better off mulching every year.

TIP! dont dump the mulch. pick it up out of the wheelbarrow with your hands and throw it, it covers MUCH better.

They sell mulches with weed blocker sprayed on them but I would read the directions to be sure it won't kill the tree. There are also rubber mulches you can buy that "they" say repel weeds fairly well. Depending on the size of the ring you are going to make around the tree, you can buy a preformed rubber disc that is made to go around the tree and still let water in.
As my hubby mentioned the weed blocking fabrics work to keep the weeds from coming up but you have to get any of the ones that land on top before they have a chance to root into the fabric.
You could try "Preen" it is a weed killing/blocking granule that is safe to use around flowers and veggies (depending on the formula you buy). Your best bet would be to go to your local Lowes / Home depot /Ace hardware type store, ask for the garden associate and ask what they reccomend. There is also the option of any local nurseries, they usually have college degrees in botany and can recomend everything from mulches to flowers that can repel weeds!

Rake up the needles that fall from the white pines and use them as the mulch around those pines. They are acidic and will stop most things from growing once it gets thick enough. I use my riding mower with the bagger to suck them up in the Fall.

Dont put the needles around the other trees though.
