What is the prevailing opinion with respect to oil changes, new rings and new piston?
I just got my AF running with a complete new top end and hour meter installed and want to stay on the ball in terms of keeping the motor happy and and trouble free. I primarily ride trails so I doubt I should follow the 'every 7 hour' top end replacement as suggested by the shop manual

It more has to do with how much gas you run through the motor than hours....
10 hours trail riding ( 4 gallons of gas) is way easier on the bike than 4 hard hours in the dunes ( 10 gallons of gas)
Service schedules depend so much on types of riding.
If you stick to tranny oil every 3rd ride, and pulling the jug once a year to measure the ring end gap and piston clearence, you'll come up with a schedule that fits YOU.....
My last top end was 3 years ago. I pull the reed block and pipe off every 6-8 months for a quick look..... looks perfect.
Use 927', and Unifilers+ Sticky Bell Ray Blue..... These things last a long time.
something you could do that works great for me, get some filter skinz (denniskirk or bikebandit used to have them). its a pantyhose type material that just goes over the filter, works sweet and keeps most of the dirt off the filter so you dont need to clean the filter it as often. when the filter skin gets dirty just pull it off and rinse the dirt out then put it back over the filter. your probly thinking they restrict air flow, i been using them for about 2 years and havent seen any noticeable air restiction if theyre kept clean
There's a lot of variables to this, fuel amount is one thing, skill level adds another. I figured once I went thur 50-60 gals one year and about 20-25 before I started riding and racing tracks.
Since I got 3 years on the last top end I expect that this time as well. June will be 2 years. Chain and sprokets are another. Chains with low ware resistance last me a year, A High ware resistance chain lasted me 4 years with a steel sproket. This June the swing arm bolt is coming out and all the link bearings are getting fresh grease. New chain and sprokets, new tire,
About 2000 miles. Or every other season. All I ride is trail, and what Bob said is true, way easier on the powerplant, but its much harder on your other components. If you're like me, a rain or shiner, puddles and mud make it necessary to pay close attention to the linkage bearings.
As far as trans fluid, I like to do it every 2 rides, which in most cases comes out to be about every 80-150 or so miles. If your bike has the stock style aluminum clutch plates in it, I strongly suggest changing them out to steels. They really contaminate the fluid quickly,something you dont want.
Other than that, I also like to change the crank seals every 2 seasons, the countershaft seal every 3 yrs or when necessary.
Suspension fluid every yr, seals and bushings every other year
A 15 tooth front sprocket will give you a bit more length thru the upper gears with very litte sacrifice on the bottom, and help out with your fuel mileage. Every extra mile counts these days.
