Carburator adjustments 85 engine PJ21A

Post by Algava »

Problems:
excessive fuel consumption
black greasy stuff from coming out the exaust
with the following settings:
60 pilot
3rd clip(middle )needle
168 main

New settings(in the video)
52 pilot
2 clip from the top
168 main

Check out the video and listen to the engine

In the video I test the engine at 0,1/2 and 1 turn airscrew.
It sounds to me that I need a bigger pilot(I'll try 55 next).
I just want to cure the issues above.

Any feedback?

It dosent really matter how it runs in your driveway.... your at about 100' above sealevel, and the closest ride spots ( Jawbone, K/M, Santa Clairita, Hungry Valley are all 3000' +.

If it runs best with the air screw " 0" turns out... I'de say you just about got it... unless your going back to Mexico, or Glamis.

I will put a 55 pilot in there.
I have also been reading up and will try a 1370N needle to solve the spooge and gas guzzling problem.
The only pain is removing the carb from this AF's.

You can't pull the slide out and turn the carb enough to take the bowl off?

My carb hits the frame doing that but the boots are flexable enough to get by.

Also if I get a 1/4 turn or less she dies.

Also try a 1470.

I can get to anything on my carb in the af, its just a little extra work. Order up a dgn (r1472n), thats what I'm running on my '86
I'm 58 pilot, DGN 3rd clip and 180 main @ 2500 ft on my '86 motor with a newer style head gasket, porting work, vforce, pwk, FMF pipe. runs like a champ and I get a little tad of spooge, which keeps me happy knowing I'm running a little rich.

What are you using for oil and ratio, you sure smoke a lot .

with a PJ carb I run a 48 and it is spot on, with a pwk I run a 45 and it is spot on, 50 ft above sea level.

Also take it for a rip before you try setting it.

It sounded better to me at 1 turn out, if you lowered the idle .

It was surging cos you have the idle (choke) screw to far out.

No probs on the kicker, ellett gave me a free one so I passed on the favor

Brit, my hat's off to you. :D
1 turn air screw and two turns back of the choke and she sounds great.
I now have +8 turns of the choke knob and +1 turn of the air screw.
I have a video but putfile.com is not cooperating right this moment, maybe later.
Maybe if I turn the choke screw 2 more turns back I can give the air screw another turn.I think the manual says at sea level air screw 2.5 turns and choke screw 5 turns,is it right?

OC Honda just called me and don't have a needle for my 85 PJ.
I wander if the newer carb needle will fit.
I was looking for a R1370N or R1372N .
I will post in the classified maybe.....

call sudco, and convert the pn to the keihin #s (the 1370, I think is CGL or CGM, can't remember) as a DGN is 1472, I still think DGN is your best bet, I have a 1369 and my bike didn't like it.
A/S is supposed to be 1 1/2

Al, you comin out to Dumont? If so, we all can help you out.
