Hard shifting
Hello all, Got my bike back together once again and started it up. Everything was great this time. (no squealing noise) I do have another issue now. Seems like it will never end! Now when I am going through the gears it seems very difficult to shift. Its like I have to hit the lever muliple times to get it to shift to the next gear and then hit it a couple of times to get it to shift back down again. Also it is very difficult to find nuetral between first and second. If I do find what I think nuetral is then i roll it forward and backward a little bit and sometimes it just decides to catch a gear or mabe just part of a gear. So basically to hit second coming out of first , you might have to lift the lever two or mabe three times. It seems to be the same in all gears. So when I am ridding it, if I am just shifting through the gears like normal you get an ocassional "ZZZIIIIINNNGGG" from it not being in a gear all the way. Has anyone ever experianced this before???

I found the problem

I found that this stopper arm or what ever you want to call it was sticking down and not applying any pressure to the shift drum when I was trying to shift. As far a I can tell I must have tightend the bolt too tight. The reason I say that is because the machined collar of the bolt had been distorted so that when the bolt is tight then the arm becomes pinched between the bolt head and the washer. Once I took the bolt loose slightly the stopper became free and was then applying pressure to the drum again. At this point the transmission now shifts perfect and I can find all the gears plus nuetral as it would if it were new again. Now its just the aggony of waiting for a new bolt , washer, clutch housing gasket to show up in the mail. So I guess becarefull when tightening this bolt.

just read that and was going to suggest looking at that. On my '86 neutral was really hard to find and it didn't shift very well. I took the spring for that arm and stretched it out to put more tension down and now it shifts really crisp. I put a new spring on my gen-4 and that one didn't shift nearly as nice, ended up stretching out the new spring. I also only use the clutch to start or in super hairy shit, dirt bike trans are mad to be shifted clutchless, thats why 2 of the gears have a big gap in the dogs to allow slack whn there isn't a load.
