1984 Expansion Pipe

Post by kobotashi »

Hey guys...new to the site, but been riding all my life. This is my first 500 I just picked up. I am having a hell of a time starting it. I got the whole dip it to the side, throttle, rock it back and forth, kick it....but nothing. Spark is there but looks kind of weak. My questions is I know I have a crack in my expansion pipe due to the black goo coming out when I try and start it. Could this be part of the starting problem? Also, I am gonna weld it, but are there any pipes out there that I could use from a different year. I cant find a 1984 expansion pipe, and the places that had it listed had a price of like $400.

did you cross your fingers, tilt your head back, count to 3, raise your right hand, and jump up and down on left leg ? people say theres a starting drill but i say thats hogwash  . sometimes the cylinder will dry up and need a prime to get fired but there shouldnt be any funky magical trick. ive had to put mine in gear and rock it a few times

Yeah honestly I think its just been flooding it out. The next time I try kicking it I will just turn the gas on, pull the choke, and kick it. Still wondering about the pipe though.

That's just a bunch of voodoo. The way to start it is to push it through the compression stroke with the kicker to the point in between the compression 'peaks'. Then let the kicker go back to the top and give it a single strong kick- make sure you follow through all the way to the foot peg.

It should start in one or two kicks unless it is flooded. I made a real ass of myself until I figured how to do it on my 85- it's easy for me now.

Depending on how rich your pilot is you may or may not have to crack the throttle a tiny bit.
