its not closed off you jackass.. IF YOU WOULD READ MORE... it goes a little like this.
Railroad company has a 100' easement (ballpark) They are putting up the fence along the edge of this easement because they say sand is the reason all these trains are derailing out there. The fence will run all the way from wash 40 something down to hwy 78.
NOW for the part you probably missed cuz you were either drunk or stoned or both..
There are openings at EVERY WASH for traffic to get into the wash camping area.
The WASH ROAD IS NOT CLOSED! yet!
You can still access the dunes, You still can camp in the wash's. Nothing has changed OTHER than a fence on the west side of the wash road. Have there been speculations of the RR coming in and closing the wash road. Yes will they do it i highly doubt it. are the DUNES closed NO.. people will just have to find other places to camp in the worst case scenario..

97 Steel 500 that wants to be an AFC
Here is the latest I got this from glamisdunes.com The author is Neil Hamada from the BLM
Vicki Wood, Tom Zale, Steve Geyman, and I just returned from a meeting with
the UP project representative for the fence project along the Wash Rd. in
the Glamis area.
I met with him earlier this season and dispersed the information I was
provided about the specifications of the fence and the openings at each
wash that would remain for camping access. Since then, many things have
changed. They have decided to eventually close the Wash Road.
My first meeting resulted in UP making several accommodations for us to
address access issues, such as starting the fence at the BLM kiosk instead
of at SR78. The project manager wants to accommodate us, however he
receives direction from his home office in Omaha. He agreed to keep most
of the washes open for Presidents' Weekend. I measured some of the
openings and the smallest one was 15' 6". After a discussion with him, he
agreed to ask the construction crew to widen the openings they had recently
made more narrow. This was an accommodation made specifically for our
Dunes visitors at the request of BLM. However, the fact remains, they will
eventually close the road with a gate at the north end and more metal post
placed in the current wash openings with no trespassing signs mounted to
them.
Currently, we are working on a NEPA, document to do road maintenance at the
remaining wash openings. We have been working on this document since we
first heard of the fence project (several weeks) and are currently waiting
for archeological approvals. At that time we were told they did not plan
to ever close the road. We have already received approval from the USFWS.
If we are able to finish the required analysis in time, we intend to do the
grading before President's Weekend. We have taken an inventory and have
prioritized eight washes that we will start at. We will also be required
to have a tortoise monitor biologist on site during the project and he/she
will have to complete a reporting document after the grading project.
I believe we should plan for Wash Road access to end for the 2009/2010
season. If we do not have a new road in place by then access in the wash
will be limited to driving through the flat sandy areas south and west of
the fence. All access would be cut of south of wash 8/9 due to the dune
arm that extends to the Wash Road. The Wash Road is currently the only way
around this sandy area for RVs.
If camping is limited to the area describe above I would expect that we
will see substantial impact to the resources in more accessible areas and
campsites. For instance, the area that is east of the railroad tracks
near Ted Kipf Road is a limited use area. The area was heavily used prior
to the lawsuit closure. During the closure, the visitors relocated their
use into the Wash Road areas. I expect the fence project will push the
visitors back into the limited use area which will increase cross country
travel, illegal OHV use on a county maintained road, and increase OHV
crossings over the railroad tracks at SR78. I'm sure there will be more
impacts but they will be hard to predict at this time.
During the upcoming holiday weekend, with or without our grading occurring,
I would expect we will have many large RVs that will not want to chance
damaging their vehicles and trailers by driving through small openings, in
sand, with a tight turning radius, and just continue down the road to the
end of the fence at Wash 28. This means we will have an unusually large
crowds in the more sensitive and less disturbed microphyll woodlands
habitat. It will also place the visitors closer to the closure boundary
and could lead to more incursions.
Law Enforcement and EMS access will also be limited. Our fee collection
contractor and VSS staff will receive the brunt of the frustrations over
the upcoming holidays at the fee check points. It will be critical to have
Rangers protecting the staff.
Lastly, I have been informed from UP there have been Senators and
Congressmen contacted who are calling their headquarters. My contact said
that they will continue to move forward on the fence unless they are told
differently. They plan to have all the post installed by President's
Weekend and then will be following up with the fencing material.

ISBB why dont you read a little more of the thread and see tha ITS DAMN NEAR IMPOSSIBLE TO GET A TRUCK OR HAULER INTO THE WASHES
Considering more than half the people camp in the washes I consider that at least half closed off.
Fuckwit

Lets see....
But I guess according to you everything is all good rite?
Anyways, the fence has a few openings at the numbered washes but they are really no wider than 12' and almost impossible to get any kind of moho or hauler through the opening.
Yesterday on the way out I stopped and spoke with the guys installing the fence. According to him the road is going to be closed 100%. As we were leaving they were installing the post in the washes that were left out. He said they had left them out as long as possible but the rail line has instructed them to close them now. All of this due to the 3 kids killed last year. He said the families are suing the rail line for 37.5 million. So the rail company has no choice other than to close down the road to prevent any future accidents. He said the fence will carry down approx. 8 miles. I asked him if a new road was going to be installed, he said no unless someone from BLM or one of the glamis organizations does one.
I believe that the sand fences started at wash 15, but I could be wrong one wash + or - in either direction. The pics do make it look like you can get into wash 23, but trust me you can't. South Dunes Robert was the first to get there and tried, but it is at such an angle that his trailer would have hit the fence.....and trust me the fence wins. There was no fence up on New Years weekend, just I - Beam poles. Two weeks later all of that fencing was up, so I don't know what any new fencing would look like and it does seem to be going up rather quickly. I would say by Presidents weekend the fence will probably be complete. Hopefully WoodIsGood will know more when he returns on monday when he gets back. This is what happens when a trailer hits the sand fence......I would hate to see the trailer if this was the result
The small openenings that were left by the RR that they said they would always leave because they said they would always let us into our washes... are being systematically closed, one by one by the RR. Campers were even "closed into" a wash at one point.
In otherwords, what we were all saying... that the RR was going to completely close the road down and that they were lieing to us about WHY they built the fence is all true.
The rumor on the street is that the RR actually admited to Niel that the fence is due to the multi-million dollar lawsuit over the Rhino wreck... (which happened at the CROSSING)
So there you go. Many washes are already closed completely. Niel says... "There's nothing I can do" and our dunes have just been cut in half.
But I guess according to you everything is all good rite?

I have to side with Brit on this one, closing Wash Rd. which is eventually going to happen next season, according to the above Quote, is the same as displacing half the population.
I hope all the ones involved with both of the Glaims sites got all the law enforcement and Governemnt they cried for.

Copied from another site.....
"Got this email from ASA..its official, after Prez weekend...the ENTIRE wash road will be closed permanantly.
Dear Fellow aSa Member,
We have just received updated information regarding Union Pacific Railroad’s (UPRR) fence project from the BLM. As many of you might already be aware, UPRR has been installing a fence just inside their property line which extends 100’ from the centerline of the rail road tracks and encompasses essentially all of Wash Road. This project started in mid-November and will extend from approximately Highway 78 to the south; ending-point unknown at this time.
Until recently, UPRR was honoring a commitment made to the BLM to continue to allow public access down Wash Road, leaving an opening at each wash to allow for vehicular access; some openings being narrower than others and some openings more accessible than others, depending on the flow of the wash. To minimize the impact of these restricted openings to thousands of ISDRA visitors, the BLM has begun the necessary environmental procedures to be able to grade some of these openings to allow for better access into various wash openings.
After this past weekend, it was brought to our attention that it appeared that UPRR was changing their plans and access was becoming more and more limited along Wash Road. BLM met with UPRR representatives on February 4th to discuss their project and their prior agreement to continue to allow access, only to find out that they had changed their position and will close the road to all public traffic at some point in the future.
At the urging of the local BLM office, UPRR has agreed to allow the use of this road, hopefully, for the rest of this dune season but in all likelihood will restrict access for the 2009-2010 season.
Again at the request of the BLM, the contractor will be enlarging some of the openings in the fence to allow for access during the upcoming Presidents’ Day holiday weekend. This improved access may, at some locations, not accommodate large motor homes or extremely long trailers.
The BLM has identified locations that they have prioritized for grading to remove berms to help improve access.
This is not the result that we hoped for but it is what we know at this point.
The ASA has been conferring with the BLM, our legislative contacts and our legal team to see what if anything can be done to allow continued use of UPRR’s right of way. We will also be working to see what it will take to have a new access road constructed on the BLM land to allow access to these traditional camping areas. The construction of a new access road is a long term solution to this problem.
The ASA has sent a letter to the UPRR management to express our concerns about the closing of this road to the public and the loss of access to recreation camping areas. This letter can viewed here:Letter to UP Railroad

I haven't read all the replies yet except for the one above but ya next season its toast. Looks like dumont may see more of me.
No one has connected the dots yet, I read that the RR is adding a second line from Niland all the way passed the dunes. Now I don't remember if that line is going to be on the east side of the current tracks or the west. If west its done. Or until, if at all a new road is cut in.
One Idea I got out of what I read so far is that the dumpster problem could be solved,......... hehe put your trash on there side of the fence.
course I don't do such a thing.
