What Happened?
What Happened?
ok so i went riding yesterday and it was just problem after problem. first off the trails we went to were really wet and i had to make some water crossings, 2 of which stalled the bike and i think i got water in it. the water came up to just below the exhaust port so i think it got in through the filter when i was spinning the tire. took alot of kicks to get it started again but the second time it stalled wasnt as hard to get it running again.
so now we are away from the water and starting to get into some fast trails, i downshift into 4th for a turn and realize the bolt that holds my clutch lever to the perch fell off. so i had to use the key ring from my truck key and bend it to fit through the hole and hold the lever on.
so now we are back riding again and my chain comes off, i stop and find a rather large stick jammed between my back wheel and sprocket. also it somehow bent my lower chain guide so i had to take that off, but i got to use one of the bolts for my clutch lever! lol
so now we get into some real open trails and im haulin 5th gear and it just starts dieing, it felt and sounded exactly like it was running out of gas. i downshift through all the gears to keep the motor turning but it was no use and i come to a stop. i didnt even try to kick it, a friend gave it a shot though but nothing, i knew it was done for the day. we had to lay it on the back of my friend's utility quad to get back to the trucks, but we got back right before dark and it started raining as soon as we got loaded up so just in time.
and from the time we started riding till the time we had to strap it to the back of the 4 wheeler was only about an hour! ive never had this many different problems at once before.
im gunna start working on it tommorow, any ideas on what happened and where to start? the motor was still running smooth as it was dying, and had full power the whole day up untill then. im gunna change the plug but i think theres more to it than that, dont know why it would run fine and then all the sudden stop because the plug was bad. also im gunna check the carb to see if maybe its clogged from any water/dirt i could have sucked up
any ideas?
thanks for any help

This isnt a "Hand Holding" site, its a " Hey Hoons... I tried 1-2-3 and X-Y-Z and I'm still stumped..." kind of site.John wrote:....any ideas? Thanks for any help
Why dont you dig into it a little further, and either find the issue, or give us a little more info to go on.
Not being a dick or anything, we just subscribe to the D.I.Y. mentality first, then extend the helping hand second.....

i said im gunna change the plug and clean the carb, i dont know what to do after that. this seemed weird to me it was running fine and then all the sudden started dieing, felt like it was running out of gas. thought maybe someone would recognize the problem right off the bat and maybe its common.
no one has to help me that doesnt want to, i wont mind

That's not it at all, what you decribe could be tons of differant things.no one has to help me that doesnt want to, i wont mind
You will have to start with the basics, then give use details.
Did it suck water?
Pull the pipe and see if the rings are stuck, push then with a screw driver, do they spring back? pull the reed block, what do the reeds look like?
pull the flywheel what are the electrics like? That is what you should start with.

I'd say elecrtical or seizure. check for spark and run a compression test. if both look good, then pull the carb and take a lookie. It takes quite a big for crud, or a big chunk to plug those suckers up. If the carb is plugged, it might have caused a lean condition causing a seizure. Don't want to make to panic, but thats exactly what happened to my 125 when it over heated, just acted like it ran out of fuel and both of my rings were seized to the piston.

ok the air filter was soaking wet, i cleaned it really good and re-oiled. I also changed the spark plug, but forgot to check for spark
thats all i had time for and it didnt want to start. tommorow afternoon ill check for spark and report back, it defiantly seems like an electrical problem to me. it still turns over the same as before. if i dont have spark ill check out the other stuff you guys said
thanks

Well, here is a tip. You have a soaking wet air filter, you better hurry up and turn that engine over. Kick it slowly, then attempt to start it. Even if it doesn't start, if there is water in the combustion chamber, you need to get it out fast before the whole insides rusts solid. I would pull the plug first, then kick it, that should force most of the water out without creating a possible hydro lock situation. If alot of water comes out, your gonna need to take the top end apart and dry everything up. Also check the crank case oil for signs of water. If there is some, you might have a seal leak somewhere.

This is the introduction to about every seieze story that I have ever heard....
.... all 452,345 of them.
Not a good sign.
Pull the pipe and have a Look-See for any signs of "Black Death" on the ol' piston.

well my friend comes over today and we were gunna start working on it, i told him i couldnt get it to start after i cleaned the filter and changed the plug. he said it didnt start because i suck at kicking it, i said ok big shot then you kick it. he turns the gas and choke on, gives it 2 primer kicks, and then BAM fires right up and runs smooth. I took it around the block and it runs perfect. i really suck at kicking it, i can kick it real hard but i just dont have the touch that he does. he always is able to start it first kick when i cant. and ive read about the technique and watched the video where the guy explains how to start it. i just suck
im gunna change the oil and clean it up a bit, and im sad to say i have a buyer coming to pick it up Sunday for more than what i payed for it. I love this bike and I plan to get another one soon, but right now id rather sell it and buy a utility 4 wheeler. thats what most of my friends have and i always have a hard time following them on my dirtbike or sport quad. i already got a trx250r to go fast so i dont really need the cr500, but it sure is a blast to ride. i hate to sell it but its just not practical right now and doesnt get much use. i will buy another one though for sure, i would never own any other dirtbike except the CR500, everything else is slow compared to it, guess im ruined for life and cant buy any other dirtbike

hey man, this aint bannedqwadtards.comPorted&Polished wrote:Starting techique is like finding the G spot, you either have the touch or you don't.And yea, since you have a trx250, you don't need a cr500.
And yes, having a 4x4 utility quad is great, I am lucky enough to have one, and a cr500, and it's the best of both worlds.

HAHAHA, I just wanted an excuse to use that one!

the 250r will have a pro-x 330 cylinder soon, basically it quenches the need for speed
and the utility will go places the 250r and the cr500 are not able to, thus making it possible for me to go riding more often with my friends on utilitys
i got alot of stuff going on right now, sometime before april i plan on getting another cr500 and keeping both quads

Class Dismissed!
oh yeah i know that a bike can go anywhere, ive climbed many hills that my friends cant on their quads, also alot of techniqle spots where a quad cant make it
but im talking about mud and water, i ride florida trails, like this past weekend where i sucked up water, my buddys on quads didnt have any problems. utilitys are just better in that department for cruising wet trails and mud. but i bet i could make it through strictly mud (no water) better than them if i had a paddle tire, 3rd gear wide open i would be unstoppable

Don't listen to these quad haters, most of them don't know what a 4x4 quad can do. You can ride in flip flops with a beer in one hand, and make it through stuff a cr500 would never make. When it snows here, my quad is the king and nobody can follow me on anything less than an equal machine. That said, I would never take my quad to a open desrt, or a Glamis ride, well, maybe Glamis, but only for a night ride, with a cooler full of refreshments and a drinking chair straped to it.

Don't Clyde it, ride it!
