The truth is diamonds are not even worth a fraction of their market price. In the words of deBeers own chairman, Nicky Oppenheimer, "Diamonds are intrinsically worthless, except for the deep psychological need they fill.” (1)
The Diamond Empire: Oppenheimer family's cartel, Artificial scarcity (1994)
This is a very important documentary to watch if you ever plan on getting married and wishing to receive or to buy a diamond ring. Or, if your already have one, you might realize it has more of a sentimental value, rather than something worth a lot of money.
Now, I love blue diamonds.... but after watching this, I think I might stick to precious stones that have real value, like sapphires and emeralds, for example.
The only reason sapphires, emeralds, tanzanites, spinels, etc. and other true precious stones are cheaper than diamonds is because people have been conditioned to believe that only diamonds are true and real gems. In reality, diamonds are semi-precious and very abundant. Most sapphire and emerald mines are empty, while deBeers has warehouses full of uncut diamonds.
The information provided in this documentary is excellent and priceless and it might save you a couple thousand dollars.
