carb help

Post by ss1 »

im looking into getting a new carb and have heard great reviews for the pwk air striker 38 or 39mm,my question is what do the #'s on my pj carb mean now it says 27nakf on my cr500,i also have a 95 cr 250 with a pj carb and it says 28jath,i was curious what the mm size was for each of those and if im improving mm size by going with one of the pwk's i mentioned, thanks

dont be fooled into thinking youll get a huge increase in HP or some magic smoke that will appear from the exhaust and make you go 200mph, becuase it wont happen, if thats what you were thinking. i used the 39pwk and its good carb and works damn good, and i used the pj its damn good to. i remeber selling a almost brandnew 38pj for around $40, personally if you could find something cheap like that, i would do it rather than 4 X that amount for new pwk. and i remeber pete loomis telling me the pj works real good when bored out also, if you wanted to go that route. just wanted to lay it out in real terms so you dont get caught in a bunch of hype

in response to 100hp honda:
i understand what you mean,i was just curious to see what the stock mm was on the original pj and if it was worth switching over to the airstriker, the one benefit that was often talked about was not sharing the same circuit for the choke and idle like the pj ,i was going to buy a 39 or 38mm pwk and have it for either one of my bikes [the 250 or 500]thanks

i have no problems with either carb i have but i have two bikes and it never hurts to have a extra carb around so in getting a pwk to try out and also have a spare ..i guess

The OEM carb is a 38 PJ. The PWK comes in different sizes, but the one you may have heard most about is the 39. Which measures 39.5 I believe? As you can see, not an earthshattering difference. The size difference alone I don't think amounts to anything, positive or negative for them both. I haven't seen the insides of the PJ, but I feel that the PWK is probably made better which accounts for what your butt feels. If I was going to drop coin on one of these carbs I'd do like 100hp honda says and get the 41 PWK. Atleast it may be a large enough to make a legitimate difference over your 38 PJ...

X2

All the 38mm carbs are OEM on CR250's, 300EXC's. etc...

41mm is far from " overcarbing" a 500cc motor.

Get the 41, I love mine.

Peckerhead loves his too.

As it goes the bigger carbs should be used for high speed/wide open riding/hill climbs.

Hope your a master at jetting.

I bored my PJ and got a tad over 40 mm out of it. This carb performs equally as well as a bored PWK which if you measure can only get out another .5 mm (it's really a 40.5 mm) before you see daylight on either side of the slide. just have your PJ bored. cheaper and will perform just as well. You can get carbs bored (go to a good shop who know what they are doing) for around 50-75.00

No way.... the cresent slide and idle circuits are way better.

Way pay 50% of what a PWK costs, and not have a PWK???
