HELP! bike puked all it's oil out

Post by nmdesertrider »

I went riding today, check oil level at weep hole and was okay.
About 5 minutes into the ride it started shifting funny and then got stuck in 3rd.
I walk it back to the truck to check it out and my right boot covered in oil! I crawl underneath and can't find any holes- but there is some oil around the weep hole.
Case vent line not plugged, just filled with oil and no leaks. WTF??

i think its impossible for all the oil to come out the weep hole....even more impossible in the span of 5 min. maybe drain bolt was loose or something else

Check bolts on your clutch cover? Or oil drain bolt? Kicker shaft seal? Weird.

What "weep hole" are you refering to? The "check oil level" hole or the water pump cover weep hole? If your boot was covered, seems like you found where the oil leak is...

Sounds like the center gasket shifted.... and primary compression from the crankcase is pressurizing the transmission....

Not good.

Nah, that just means he has oil injection now. Just replace the crankcase oil with premix oil and top it off after each ride...

Yeah, it was kind of cold out, i thought it might be a crankcase seal pushing out.

:? If at any point you put oil in and it wasn't pooling on your shop or garage floor when you loaded your bike why would you even crack that bolt open?

1. He had the bolt cracked before the ride. Oil was good.
2. His boot was covered in oil
3. That bolt is positioned below the 750mL mark
4. The clutch is going to help oil weep through the hole at any level.
5. Five minutes of riding was probably more like 15 minutes including warm up.
6. The transmission will seize before it's completely out of oil.

I never check the "level" hole...

I just dump in the whole quart, and be done with it .

I used to do that, but them it would blow the extra out the breather tube all over my rear tire... I don't like oil all over my rear tire  I just put like 800ml in it each change

yup, I've even had the cases apart again since then and replaced the little rubber peice with a new one on my first rebuild. if I put a full quart in my gen-1 and rev it in my driveway, it will squirt some out the vent hole, but never does it if I only put 800ml in...

Actually i had a crack in the case next to the drain plug, so I had it welded and then had it helicoiled.

It does leak a little- this is a hard one to fix without getting a new case.

Come to think of it, the ride before I had fouled a plug, which didn't really seem significant at the time because the plug was 6 months old.

So you pushed it back to the truck with the clutch pulled in and stuck in third?

So one of the spring loaded thingys on the end of the shifting drum broke?

Plus how cold is it and is there 80W gear oil in there?
