Unless the motor was put together wrong (I doubt AJ hasnt figured out yet how to do build a 500) there is lots of possibilities (bad gas, improper mix ratio or forgot to put oil in gas all together, etc etc.). Trust me, im not defending AJ, not in the least (especially after my phone call with Bobber today) just stating a point that you never met this guy and just because he owns a $10K dirt bike dont mean he has a clue how to tune or operate it, thats all...
Thanks for the vote of confidence MFDB. Actually the ignition problem with the bike went on far longer than necessary because I continued to assume that I was doing something "wrong" - couldn't do the rabbit kick, CR500Rs are special, other guys can start my bike etc... Then I had an epiphany and realized I could start all sorts of other 2 strokes including the CR480R which is no easy feat first kick. Why was this so different? Then a little investigation showed the ignition was firing pretty much when it felt like it. Put a stock ignition in its place and literally it started the next kick.

When your bike shows up like this.... I hope your still impressed....
if you walked into service honda to purchase a bike and had 2 bikes next to each other one looked like the picture above and one that looks more normal...which one you walking out the door with?
redrocket190 wrote:The bike had a bag ignition which AJ replaced, and then that was later replaced with stock components (hat tip to Mike F...). The jetting is still conservative, but is 2 sizes smaller on the main and pilot, and has the DGN needle. I also learned that it - all CR500Rs? - needs 5 slow priming kicks. I would argue it had plenty of power then, but it definitely has plenty now.
Was that your bike, that I rode, at Amago.
Hammer.

Why didn't you, addmit it was yours, in this post. I was surprised, when you came back and told me you thought it ran well.
Can I ride it again, now that it's fixed, so that I can make a better choice, before I buy anything. I liked the way it looked, thats why my STEELIE looks like your bike, did, but with a 5 gallon tank, lights, and a plate.
Thanks, Hammer.

I thought between that post and the one 2-3 later you might work it out. My bad. Since that day I've done vet motocross, several GPs, Pismo Beach, even been trail-riding at Pinnacles. My 1979 CR250R is all jealous because she doesn't get any attention any more....
...if I knew what I know now and had a "do over" I'd find an 2nd hand CRF250X and a CR500R motor and have TTM build a GP bike from the ground up. I wouldn't stress so much over the lights and stuff.
