i had this old ts400 laying around and took it apart to see how it worked. it uses piston port design rather than reed intake. the rear transfer closest to the intake is pointed almost straight up at the head, the other transfer closest to the exhaust is pointed straight across horizontal. its old timer but kind of cool

yeah, I got a lot of ideas on doing my porting work from looking at odd ball motors. Learned a lot for tearing into the yamaha srx440 sled motor. that was a 2 cylinder 2 stroke 440 no reeds, no powervalves and they put out over 100 hp in 1980 I saw some VERY interesting stuff in there as far as port shape and transfer flow direction
also at one point I had a few various 250 jugs in my garage at once, a honda, yamaha and suzuki and got to compare them all. The suzuki was really weird because it was halfway between being a reed motor and not. like it had one reed pedal bolted to the bottom of the jug and no cutout in the piston, but a horizontal intake bridge... weird

if only the R+D went into the 2 strokes like they did the 4 strokes. we would have much more powerful motors with broader powerbands.

when you look at all the radically different designs, you wonder what crossing ideas would give you.
