02 450- worth converting?
Found a really cheap one ($750, blown up motor). Is this worth the effort, or should I look for a newer 250F?
FUCKKKKKKKKKKKK YES!!!! I love my 02 450 conversion!! you deffinately need to go ahead, let your boner settle down and grab a hold of a grinder, look at my build thread or eyeskys and get your shit togetherrrr...They are imho the largest AF frame that honda has built and you will never get another chassis that can be as effective with a 500 motor as the gen 3 450! (just kidding they're all effective, but this chassis is HUGE and it fucking rules)!!

if you are a small rider the CR 250 is probably better but for a 500 motor I feel it is the best high speed aluma tub period. it is slower handling compared to the 250. They require offset triples to turn their best.Blusmbl wrote:Alright, I'm on it...I should've realized the 02 was a gen 3 chassis, everybody's raving about them. It sounds like I can get the motor together and sell it for what I have in the bike.
Exactly, sounds like a killer deal...I got my roller for 300$ but i'm pretty sure it was stolen, but i checked with the dmv and they said it isn't so i got lucky, plus it's a dirt bike so who gives a shit...Anyways don't get yourself mixed up between a Gen 3 450 and a Gen 3 250!! there's quite a gigantic difference, and by far the gen3 450 will be a harder less clean conversion, but DO NOT let that bother you because the end result is a HUGE bike that will scare the piss out of anyone who rides it and it controls very well, especially in dunes. This is how the 450 conversion goes:Blusmbl wrote:Alright, I'm on it...I should've realized the 02 was a gen 3 chassis, everybody's raving about them. 1. You need to cut and relocate the y section, what you use for alum extensions is up to you. the cradle is 1 1/8''X3/4'' tubing stock.
2. Both motor mounts are changed, i suggest recycling the stock mounts to use for the 500.
3. You need to notch out the cradle for the one or two lowest clutch cover bolts so you can get enough engine rotation to not have to deal with the tank/plug clearance.
4. the lower rad mounts need to be changed as well as the spouts on the 450 rads, what you do for the spouts is up to you. many options.
5.pipe and silencer mounts need to be made and welded into place after you create the Y clearance.
6. 500 Cdi box fits in existing 450 rubber holder upside down using the 450 cdi mounts
7.Coil fits best on the inside of the right frame spar (imho)
8. Airbox is a gen 1 250 boot adapted to fit 450 airbox using whatever material you desire.
9. Most importantly and this shoudl be #1. but that is the swingarm spacers must be 59mm and 54mm honda 125 bushings.
10. put your ass on the bike and go hurt yourself!!!!

I have alot of time on my hands so i figure i'd get you started because this chassis is slowly becoming my favorite of all AF's....not to convert, but deffinately to sit on, ride and look at!

and remeber all this advice is coming from a old man thats apparently a champion at super cross, sand, desert, and moto x. and we have yet to see a pic of ANY of his many many claimed bikes he owns. nothing but hot air from that old timerSlow old Fart wrote:if you are a small rider the CR 250 is probably better but for a 500 motor I feel it is the best high speed aluma tub period. it is slower handling compared to the 250. Does your's have offset triples? Have you rudden other AF's? I like the GEN 3 450 the best overall 2. I have ridden my GEN 4 450 500 a GEN 1 250 500 a GEN 2 250 500 and a GEN 3 450 500. I found overall it works the best with a 500 motor for me. I liked the GEN 3 250 a little better in tight stuff .Balaclava wrote:Gix, i remember that bike it's sick, all that red billet stuff is so bloody expensive though...but looks pretty good.

I rode a 01 conversion and it felt like a BMX bike under me, just to small my 6'3" 240lb in gear budy, not to mention it was owned by someone 189lb geared up so the suspension was way off! Mine still has the stock triples, it used to handle like shit til I got the suspension done! Now at least at my skill level it cuts like a knife; sure someone with higher skill level would pick up on the offset issue!

The 20's are even better and it really does not seem to effect high speed but turns much better.Balaclava wrote:i just threw some black pro taper 22mm offsets on mine, and for the brief period of time i had to ride it, i was loving it...I gotta agree with SOF that the 02-04 450 frame spars are by far the nicest of any AF...my bike, my dog, my crutches...

The 20's make a big difference period.Biggest improvment for Gen 3 450 IMO where I was riding. Bike turns much better night and day.eyesky2002 wrote:I rode a 01 conversion and it felt like a BMX bike under me, just to small my 6'3" 240lb in gear budy, not to mention it was owned by someone 189lb geared up so the suspension was way off! The thing is they do not work on a GEN 4,makes the front end shovel worse in loose terrain.

Well, apparently my vagina had sand in it on Friday... I didn't go look at it. The price was decent, but I talked myself out of it by rationalizing how shitty of a rider I am, and spending a couple grand converting my steelie over to an AF wouldn't improve my ability any.
I still really want to build one, but attempting it right now would equate to pissing up a rope.
It definitely sounds like it's the bike for me though, as I'm 6'4"/290-ish...
The bike was listed for $750, needed case halves, a crank, a rear fender, and probably other engine parts too. It did have newer 05/06 triple clamps and fatbars on it already.
I'll probably be kicking myself in another 3 days for passing it up.
