Air Cooled motor?

Post by supermotoflunkie »

I came across an air cooled CR500 motor locally on craigslist.

http://denver.craigslist.org/mcy/856914924.html

Im pretty sure I already know the answer, but is an air cooled motor worth the time? Do they still make big HP numbers? What kind of Pros/Cons?

they ping like hell, and haulass if you can hang on... I would use one in some oddball project like a 500 ATC or something, but wouldn't do an a/f with one.

This engine would be awesome in an AF if it will fit(fin clearance)

There are plenty of fixes for the so called ping issue
I never had a problem

Would be lighter than the water cooled engine with a lower center of gravity

Fixes like richer on the main? and/or step down compression?

What kind of power do they make compared to LC?

honestly, to say what has more power is too broad...
the '84 has the most power out of them all and had the slowest laptimes. its an uncontrolable hit.

Some people change the squish band on the head $30
Some run an extra gasket.
I dont know if my head was stock on mine, I ran a late model PJ carb
with the AC low speed jet of 68 and a main at 180( I did lots of WOT riding in the dez)
