Old gas

Post by hoofarted »

How old can gas get before it should not be used? I have a 40Gal fuel tank in my TH that I used to fuel my bikes, etc and the gas is approx 9 months old. Ran fine for the 4 stroke lawnmower. But when I went to mix it with 927, the 500 fouled its 1st plug! It was hard to start, back fired, etc. So I thought it has to be the gas. No other changes were made - never spooged before either. It did yesterday...Does this sound like the culprit?

I think 9 month old fuel would be considered past it's prime, most gas is oxygenated now days and this would go away over time in an environment that was not completely airtight.

As for the spooge out the pipe, I rode yesterday myself and has a perfect no spooge pipe all summer but yesterday it was much colder and I had a little out the end of the pipe at the end of the day. It's the weather change that effects the jetting, try changing the airscrew setting. Sometime I even have to go to a smaller pilot jet in the winter.

Cheers

thats weird since the cold will lean the thing out. colder denser air requires more fuel.

Gas will keep damn near indefinatly if its in a metal can and well sealed, if the container on the hauler is plastic and or doesnt seal well there is a good chance its crap. Jetting with crap gas is a non starter.

Gas that isn't perfectly sealed will lose it's volatility in a matter of days. The lack of volatility makes it harder to start, and it won't be as responsive to changes in throttle position, but steady state is usually okay even with shit fuel.

I think it depends on the fuel for one. Arco, thrifty, valero. Local processed shit is oxygenated as prior stated, it contains low grade alcohol. It will last about two weeks in a plastic container. Longer if completely sealed. If you have it in your toyhauler consider that a plastic can. Toy haulers prior to this year meet NONE of the emission standards. Meaning that the system is open. Not like a car that requires a sealed system that holds up to 7kpa before it vents. Toy hauler vents both ways constantly unless upside down or a splash of fuel hits the check valve in the cap or the vent. This is so the storage tank or pump station tank will not expand and contract in heat cycles. I dont know if thats your problem but it could be a huge part of it. Not enough btu"s or octane to burn hot enough. Inhale--- Cough, Cough. But its good enough to run that generator though.

Ahh - well its an 09 WW so I think it meets emissions. Has dual gas caps that do hold pressure too. Already drained the old gas and will replace with a fresh batch soon.

That one is too close to call WW is two years ahead on production dates. If it wasn't manufactured in the last nine months than it probably meets no emission standards. Up until about nine months ago I manufactured the 40 gal tanks for them. Thats when they changed vendors to meet the standards for small engine (CARB) emissions.
