do any of you guys do this ?
i know the ports in a stock jug are pretty rough and restrictive and rather small and dont flow real well into the bottom end, hell i noticed just how much room for improvement there is in a stock cylinder. do any you guys bother to grind the case to match the cylinder ports or grind the exhaust manild to match the exhaust ? i took a porting tool to my whole motor and made everything match perfect, just wondering if anybody else has tried it ?
I did some port matching on my 88 5.0,upper and lower intakes and throttle body.There was a fair amount of material to remove and after the work was done I noticed a nice improvement in power. I think the trick is to only remove enough material to match the ports to get the best results.

the professionals started out as amatuers at one time in their life. as with anything, no book can teach you everything. you must get hands on experience, i bought some porting tools and going to do all my own workbwh998 wrote: I never try to actually "port" anything, thats best left to people who know what they are doing.

discussing port matching, I actually reshaped my cases, since there was a ridge there that wasn't sending the charge in the right direction after I opened the hell out of my boost ports. I flattened it out and moved it maybe 1.5mm towards the front and rounded it out better so there would be a perfect and smooth transition from the big opened up boost ports to the rear transfers. plus I aimed my additional drilled boost ports at the front transfers and shaped the cases to direct that as well. I spent WAAYY too much time on this motor!

the thing that really helped me out was having these wise old men to talk to! I sent quite a number of PMs back and forth with Glen and DeWayne and I have spent some serious time on the phone. Plus all the pics people post of their professionally done cylinders just gives me more and more ideas. Plus I did my motor in stages. everytime I had to open it up and did some more porting work until it because the animal that it is. I first started with a cleanup and opening up the boost ports and I was very happy with the outcome of that and the bike was still very trail friendly, but at the dunes, I could still only beat MFDB on wet sand... I needed as Jay Lewis says "MORE POWER"
anyway after about 3 more tear downs, I now have a jug with no more fat to trim, a modded bottomend, pro modded head, even modded piston!
The bike is just plain unrideable on the trails.
Actually after my 2nd and 3rd stages into the porting (I still hadn't touched the port timing, just widened the hell out of the exhaust ports and opened evereything up) It was impossible to get a good launch out of the bike without looping!
especially after I added the CDI mod and the 41mm mikuni! so in an attempt to mellow out the bottomend and get more up top I modified my port timing to 190* and 130* if memory serves me correctly. I also swapped out the FMF gnarly for and FMF fatty the performance difference was beyond noticeable. I think the next step on this bike will be a custom pipe and possibly some fuel mod be it alky or nitrous, but first I need to extend that damn swing arm!

right now I have an old FMF fatty pipe on there and it works really well, I had dDeWayne modify a fmf gnarly for me to rev like a SOB, while still pulling hard off the line. he basically butchered the pipe and reshaped everything. I just picked up a really old fmf gold series which DeWayne says is the best mass produced pipe for the 500 EVER, but it was thin so its no good on the trails.
