Got a quick question about a 2001 250r roller?

Post by Travis »

How bad is the swap and what is it worth? Newly rebuilt forks and new plastic, new protaper bars and clamps like new front tire, 70% back tire, frame was completly wet sanded so it could be polished. It's close enough that I don't have to worry about shipping.

I wouldn't go over $1500 for a bike of that age.
they are a relatively easy conversion, ask Andy (hoofarted) how his went.

I am affraid Andy may be mad at me because I was going to buy his forks then used my own. His were a different size than mine though. Hopefully he's not upset.

na, don't worry about him, he is just a little frustrated that there is 0 interest in his old chassis.

but ya, like I said in the PM, 1400 for a gen-2 roller is high especially in the market right now. for that kind of coin, pickup a super clean gen-3 complete for $2K, sell the motor, pipe, elecronics for $800 and have a better newer chassis for $200 less

We will see how cheap this guy gets. If not I will continue to run my gen 0 until someone feels sorry for me and donates one.

i'd bargain him way down to like 1000$ or less, and then do it...unless you have patience then hold out for something else...but i love gen 2 250s...my cousin rides an 02 and the bike is wicked...i would have no problem with that frame...but i bet you could get a gen 3 for that overkill price...i have never been on a gen 3 250, so i have no idea how much better they are...

hands down, I would do a gen-3 unless I was only like $200 into a gen-2 roller.
even if not for the handl;ing and improved shock and updated forks, there is also the availability of specific parts. for a gen-3 you could walk into your local bike shop and find almost any chassis part for a '02-'07 cr250. '00-'01, not so much.

I just finished my Gen 2 from an 01 CR250. The conversion was easy. But the availability of things like plastics is going to get limited. Other than things like that, I have seen plenty of stuff available. Even the plastics. One thing to keep in mind overall, not to be a naysayer, but the cr250 was discontinued, the 500 was discontinued 8 model years ago. So there will come a time when parts for both of these bikes will be hard to come by. I don't what the prices are like where you are, but for the bikes around here an 01 250 still brings 2500 to 2000. Gen 1's are going for 1200 and up, as far as the 450's, you can't touch one for under $3000. IMO if you can get a gen 1 or 2 for a reasonable price and do your conversion then do it. Any Alu. framed conversion will out handle your steelie. Personally, I would love to do a gen3 or 4, but the cost of it, outweighs any performance enhancements if any that I would notice. Build what you can afford add oil and fuel then enjoy.

Nah - I aint mad at ya! just tryin to sell off my parts that I dont need any longer. See my build for the Gen2 to get an idea of what you're facing. I just finished mine and took her out for a quick spin...big difference. cant wait to do a real ride to really compare. If its just a roller, try not to pay over 800. good luck!
The CR500 is an acquired taste. If you don't like it, acquire some taste...

ding ding ding! go over there w/ $1500 and wave it under his nose. even a basket case gen-3 motor could fetch around $500. I got $450 for the one that was in my gen-3 and it had tons of JB, I kept the electronics and carb, shit canned the jug with a huge gouge in it and sold the head, pipe and silencer. I ended up making $450 and getting the complete '03 electronics and gave the carb to a buddy to run on his LT250.
if you peiced it out and sold the carb, electronics and had a useable jug, you could easily make $700-$800 selling off the un-needed parts.
if you have the cash to front for it...... DO IT!

Offer $1800 cash in hand:
1. ride the piss out of them, first one to blow transplant bike! :) or
2. sell those engines, $500 - + each, then take the cash build your AF500
sell the other bike, should only have minimum money invested. Either way it seems to be a win, win situation :D

Here is the de3scription he sent with the bikes.

98 has slip on procircuit pipe and jeeting to match. new bars and clutch lever. 00 has full fmf pipe and jetting. new bars and cluth also. both could use a back tire but they are not bald yet. both run great the 00 has had some port work and is a lot faster than the 98. you can come and ride both. 2000 for both or $1200 for the 98 and $1000 for the 00. they plastic is faded on the 00 and rear fender is shorter.
