Post by trgracing »

hi fellow cr fans, ive got my crf 450x frame cut, and ready to weld, { will post pics } rang my honda dealer to order a frear fender for 450 f, he went into great lengths to say that the x is totally different? is this true? he stated frame, shock, forks, can the x have the r plastics fitted, mainly because i want to race mx.. thanks in advance

the rear fender obviously has a break light, the front number plate is a head light, other then those two it looks like the shrouds are the same...if i was you i would just order the f plastics and see if it will go, i've always been able to return my parts...or have a look at the bikes at honda and just check if they will go...should be easy to figure out...

The X and R are substantially different, but that does not mean you can't do MX with it. The big item is going to be suspension where the stock spring rates and damping are significantly different. I had the suspension on my WR done for MX/GP racing but it needed to be done anyway for my weight. I have new R style springs for my bike to replace the X springs. I'd say keeping all the wiring harness in place and just take off the lights and get an R rear fender and an after-market front number plate.

the r fender will not fit. the subframes are different. very few things are the same. the frame is very different even though they look the same. swingarm is same though. a lot of little things like calipers and otherstuff will interchange . rads are bigger on the x but mounts are not the same. tanks are different. you can take a r tank with shrouds and put it on the x but not vice versa. exhaust are different, however in 05 they are the same. 05 only so if you want an r exhaust on your 06 x you order an 05 r exhaust. I can go on and on. hahaha but just do the susspension ad remove the lights when you mx.

thanks for your advise, pretty p-ssed its not the same, thought wow when this rolling chassis came along, plonk in my cr500 engine, and build my own bailey rep! but as you guys say the rear fender and subframe are different, but dont service honda build there bikes with the x subframe? i noticed a side access point to air filter? i suppose i could make the rear mx fender go on it, and take off lights, this 450x frame has got to be 200% better than the cr500 steel frame!

the airbox is different too. you could swap the whol deal. sub airbox and fender. not worth it in my book. and don't quote me but I believe service honda is using the 250x. now I think you can swap the forks and shock from an r and be in business. ebay yo.

I have the CRF250X frame and currently have an R rear fender mounted. If I was in your position I would find a friendly dealer who'll sell you a stock R or after-market fender on a "return" basis. The sub frame is different because you need somewhere to store the battery, rectifier etc... I am going to guess the fender mounting points are the same.

The X models have a side access air box. This is much easier to service and therefore Service Honda use the same airbox whether you order an X or an R model. I believe the side panel shapes are identical, but the left-hand one is split where the door opens. So pre-printed backgrounds will work.

On my X I ended up with after-market Applied Racing triple clamps which are MX style but have a kit for re-mounting the light if I want too. Because they are for MX the stock Honda number plate mounts up fine. You do lose the opportunity to mount the speedo/computer though.

For a while I left the lighting switch in place, but for other reasons it's now off the bike and I use a standard Honda kill switch.

There was a point when the storage tub was full of X parts that I thought why not start with an R frame. But here in the Peoples' Republic of Kalifornia-stan the X frame VIN gets you all year access to public lands. Bonus!
