I don't know how one can really tell the differance b/t the stock 14/49 and 15/52 as there only .04 apart in ratio.
Oh and btw 14/51 only nets 83 mph not a 100 14/49 just over 89mph. you want a 100 try 15/44. But forget about climbing Dumont in 4th gear it ain't gona happen.
But anyway 14/51 works good out here on moto tracks and the dunes. Its just a tad higher than a stock 450's, drop to a 13 for single track or tight woods.
And I don't care where the axle ends up on the swing arm. But the further back the better for me.

I don't care about mathematical top speed. I just want to be in the meat of the power at about 65-70 mph and be able to sustain that speed without being revved out. I've found it's about at that point where full on standup monster wheelies tend to ... "occur" effortlessly with a little (right) wrist action.
It's about the "sweet spot"... and still being able to take it on the track and lug it around like an ill tempered anorexic four stroke.

I find it very hard to believe you spend so much time at 70-80mph.
Either you are one badass mah facka or you got some serious VERTIGO and your ass is only going 45mph when you think you are doing 90!!

I've heard all that headshake stuff before to the point where I was scared of what my '92 would do out in the desert. I never had even a hint of that: Having said that:100hp honda wrote:the steelies shake like a dog well before 80 mph. your going to eat shit unless you have a steering damper
1. I never went 80mph. (but close).
2. I'm sure anyone who does plan to go that fast in the dirt;
a. Is crazy.
b. Knows well enough to run a dampener.
3. I think it's as much about proper setup as anything. If you run a bunch of rear preload or too low a front setting (either spring rate or oil level) you may be in danger of headshake well below 80 mph in some conditions.

Ive been to lazy to put my damper on (also dont feel like welding) so whenever the front starts to protest I just lean back and loft the front wheel. Smoothes shit right out...
Or I just take the easy way outta head shake; ride my Fo Fitty...heh heh heh

Not suprising...Im willing to bet you wont see much improvement after the rebuild either. You have to remember the 500 is mostly 80's tech and the thumpers are BOOKOO $$$ in developement/cutting edge technology.tacogrande wrote:I'm running a 15/48 and barely pulled on a mostly stock 07 yami 450.
A "stock" 500 is not much of a match for even a mildly modded 450. You have to look at it from a $$$ stand point. If you took the money you would spend on the thumper and put it into an AF with motor work THEN you would see a big difference.
But stock for stock my money is on the thumper every time...its just reality...

He beat a stock 450 all the while running 15/48 gearing! Which is damn tall if you ask me. Tacogrande is looking for a blowout...to beat the other bike so bad it's embarrassing. But it's not going to happen. You won't smoke a 125 as bad as you want to. From a standstill any bike is pretty close. It's corner to corner that really seperates machines.
A waiste of money IMO. It was all spent bringing an inferior motor up to par with it's two stroke counterparts. And what you see in this video is all that "BOOKOO $$$" thrown straight down the damn toilet as a motor with "80's tech" and over geared just shut it down. Four strokes are going to need ALOT more BOOKOO $$$ before they're even as good as some people think they are...it's just reality.M.F.D.B. wrote:You have to remember the 500 is mostly 80's tech and the thumpers are BOOKOO $$$ in developement/cutting edge technology.

the 450s get out of the hole so much quicker than a 500... hell, the whole reason I spent tons of time and money building up my gen-1 was just to beat the 450s... it does everytime now, but I have trouble hanging on
even when I only ported my motor and had a pwk on it, I was usually neck and neck with 450s, if I actually got a decent launch and I wasn't against a skinny-ass 140lb show off
now with how built my motor is I take a mellow launch and let them all get like 3 lengths on me off the line, then plow right past them in 4th about 3/4 of the way up. If I try for an even launch... well, some people were then to see that...

ya, lb for lb a stock 500 and a stock 450 in uphill sand drags, the 450 usually wins stupid 450s! I guess its all about traction and a more controlable powerband putting out more topend hp than a radical low end hit.M.F.D.B. wrote:145.3 lb's and for the record my bike is heavily heavily NOT modded HAHAHA other then an air filter and black plastics, its BONE STOCK....dannygraves wrote:I was usually neck and neck with 450s, if I actually got a decent launch and I wasn't against a skinny-ass 140lb show off

That's the truth. The first time I ran him I had stock gearing, a bald tire (running 5 psi), a dented up pipe and uber-rich jetting and it was pretty close, it mostly came down to who got the jump on the other guy. I topped out at 79.6mph in the sand. The next weekend I had a new pipe, a new Kenda millville tire, proper jetting and 15/48 gearing, good traction on the dry lake, and although I pulled a bike length or two on him in fifth, it wasn't nearly the slam dunk I was looking for. (Yeah I've been talking shit), and I'm not sure what I topped out at because the gps kept glitching out but it didn't seem much faster than before. Once you blow through the powerband in fifth it just sort of dogs out fighting the wind, so the taller gears don't help much unless you have the porting and pipe to pull the top end. I was kind of surprised by the thumper and I've found some respect for them finally I guess. We traded bikes for a while and it was nice to ride lazy and just cruise, riding the 500 is a freakin' workout. So I'm searching craiglslist for an aluminum frame, and saving some coin for porting...;M.F.D.B. wrote:Ive sen 8000hp cars run only 10 sec 1/4 miles...dannygraves wrote:I guess its all about traction

I came back not long ago from an awsome day riding. Myself and a friend had the entire track which was being resurfaced as we rode all to ourselves. Perfect! He's a hell of a rider, the B class is probably a little slow for him but he's not A material either. Maybe after this season? When we started riding together he had a CR125. He's been on a CRF250 now since January. He doesn't put any more distance between us now as he had before. This morning he was shutting me down pretty bad. I had to go to the truck and collect myself a number of times. Took some air out of my tires and got the carb to idle better and he couldn't loose me after that. I couldn't pass him, all I could do was eat his 250F roost all around the track...OH BOY But on our last hurrah I finally passed him around the inside of a 4th gear sweeper on the third lap and made it stick. I led him the remaining 5 laps. I could hear his 250F screaming behind me the entire time...but he couldn't make anything happen. He told me while we loaded up when I managed to make a pass on him his 250F had nothing for me after that. I never noticed this but he said on a couple parts of the track I would dissapear and he'd ride the wheels off that fourstroke to catch back up. Now his bike is no 450 I know that. But Daniel beats most riders anyways, 450s are just speed bumps to him. It meant alot to me today to beat a better rider straight up on his home track. On a big, clumsy, slow, difficult to ride 500
It's cool MFDB you think fourstrokes are the bomb. I give you more respect than the guy who says 500 two strokes will kill anything...just because. Anyone who races knows that showing up to a starting gate on a 500 sure as hell isn't an ace in the hole. You've got to work for it just like anybody else. I just don't like fourstrokes...I'm not nearly as effective on them. And as long as I keep spanking fourstrokes and having a blast while doing it I'm never going to agree with you. Now if you'll excuse me, I need a couple IV bags before I go to sleep.

if cr500 was still in production today do you reckon it would put out anymore power than it did in 1985 ?...nope, so i hardly see it as "80's" technology but call it what you want. could honda go back to the drawing board and make a 500cc cylinder that put out 30 hp more?..yep but thats unreasonable and theres no use for that to the general public. look what they did with saber cylinder, computer designed to maximum hp and efficiency....roughly 500cc and just over 100hp, hell ive seen guys getting 60hp from worked over 250r motors. cc for cc the 2stroke is capable of making alot more power than 4stroke. heres the reasons a 4stroke would beat 2stroke in a race:
1- brit was piloting the 2stroke, enough said
2- brit was wrenching on the 2stroke, enough said
3- 2stroke rider is 150lbs heavier
4- 4stroke has 200cc more than the 2stroke its racing
5- 2stroke rider is a moron and using knobby tire in the sand, while 4stroke has paddle tire
any questions ?

Absolutely!! But I doubt there would be any good riding with all that corn around!! HAHAMICK wrote: Would you meet me half way?

Thumpers are just plain easier BY FAR to ride in regards to skill level needed. This is just plain fact, you just prefer 2 strokes and thats why you feel better on them...MICK wrote:I just don't like fourstrokes...I'm not nearly as effective on them.

I keep seeing a "15 tooth sprocket" post growing and finally had to take a look, wish I didn't. I raced mfdb at the drags at Pismo and he had me by a bike and half at most. Of course he weighs 145 pounds less than me and my bikes engine is stock. On my ported steelie I smoked 4 stroke 450's up Olds hill many times by 5 bike lengths easy. I think rider skill in the woops is the key to a succesfull drag race because you can't be afraid to pin the bike through them and keep it pinned. The cr500 people need to recognise that a port job from one builder doesn't compare to every other builder. I'm looking forward to seeing Clydes new motor run, I know his old Jerry Hall bike flat cooked and no 450 came close to beating him. Time will tell I geuss, and I would love to see some people show up to Glamis this season where you will see my buddies 500 clobber the 450's all day.
Don't Clyde it, ride it!
