I'm curious to why people do the frame like this. Cut the whole thing out, then extend it 2" from a motor mount on the bottom. Bob, Mike, anybody want to chime in? I don't see how this is easier than just getting out the bottle jack, or just dealing with the "Y" by itself. Not bashing, just wanted to know the theory behind the thinking.

Because aluminum does not stretch the way steel will. It fatigues and breaks very easily. Believe me before I cut the frame I researched it, and if it doesn't break while streching it, it will be far weaker now. I extened my frame only about an inch on each side and moved the Y section up to accomadate the exhaust. Go get a peice of 6061 and put it in the vise and bend it around and check out what happens.

All the Gen 3 frames I have done were "different" from each other....dezertryno wrote:I'm curious to why people do the frame like this. Some like Crackers only needed a "push" for motor mount / water pump clearence, some like P/P's needed to be cut out, and repositioned.
Everyone does it different, and there are advantages / disadvantages to each..
Its all good....

It's Done!
Just finished it today. Figured out the airbox and finished up the loose ends. It's not the king of bling, but it is built to ride.

Thanks alot guys. I'm going to lite it up tomorrow and spin it around here. I only have a couple of small things to do, like the rear mount on the expansion chamber but I'm not going to mess with this one or the pipe, I would like to find a stock pipe and spark arrestor in good shape for it then put those on, but these work for now. It all wasn't as hard to do as I thought it would be, but I'm glad it's done! Can't wait to ride it!

I just took it out for a little tester ride! Holy Hell!!! I know very well the power of the 500, having ridden them for so long, but man, you put that engine in that frame and it turns into a friggin' rocket ship. I haven't ridden any of the alu. frame bikes, and like many others I didn't see the point in doing this, but honestly after riding this bike, I don't think I would go back to the steelie. This bike cuts like a hot knife through soft butter and on the straights, WOT in 5th is no problem. No shake or handling issues at all. It almost makes me want to race again! Thanks to everyone for all the help and advice, I wouldn't have taken this on without the input and the help I recieved here. Thanks.
