Mikuni question???

Post by Wheelie-Gene »

I don't mean to come off as a dumb ass, but I have a carb question.

My spare engine (that UPS lost) finally came in, and all looks good. It's complete with gear/kicker and other items I need, and.....it has a Mikuni flat-slide carb.
I don't know the size or model yet, I just unpacked the engine and took a quick peek at everything.
My years w/Hondas = Keihin carbs, this is my first Mikuni.

Anyone have any thoughts on these?
Should I stick w/a PWK???

Someone probably had the Mikuni laying around and stuck it on the 500. What part of Texas you in? San Antonio here.

Well....since the engine came w/the carb, throttle cable and twist grip, I'd say that's what the previous owner had it running on (with?). I don't have a PWK, so I might run the Mikuni and pay close attention to how the jetting feels.

Hey 87...you're over by the Quarry, or was that the Forum? We met on the other 500 site a while back when I was looking at my friend's 480. I'm (was) Old Timer over there. Good to hear back from you. You still run at the Cycle Ranch???

Is there any performance gains or throttle response with one or the other?

I actually noticed an improvement between the mikuni and pwk, but the mikuni was larger, so it isn't really a fair comparison.
I'm running the fm46j needle, 50 pilot and 350 main w/ 100 powerjet. It should be running something closer to a 420 main w/o the powerjet.
Is it a pro series 39 or 41 or a 38mm? the 38mm was standard on some 250s and still an upgrade from the POS PJ, but a pwk would probably give you some improvement at full throttle. if you have a 39 or 41 pro keep it and run it!
