The original "AF"

Looks like an aluminum subframe, but a steel main frame. In any case, sounds to me like the true first use of the term "AF" on a honda, leaving AJ as a copy cat, maybe even infringing on a copywrite!

I saw that bike in person at Gatorback in Gainesville, FL, that year ('84). He completely handed Glover his ass but, unfortunately for Bailey, Glover returned the favor the next year on a mostly stock 490.

Bailey, leading up to the '85 season, had said something like "no one would like to be beaten like Broc was last year" and I "guess" Glover didn't like it.

It is a very interesting bike. Maybe you guys can tell whats up with the funky tank. From what I can tell it is also aluminum the weird part is it has a petcock high and low on the right side but I can only see one fuel line going to the carb on the left side. The carb has a huge drain plug that looks like it may serve duty as larger float bowl. Was honda playing with exotic fuel using the lower tank for that and the upper for regular gas??

Despite having a viscous hangover this morning I managed too reply.I'm a big fan of the Air Cooled 500 and seeing this bike perked me up. It's cool too note the differences between the two, you can kind of tell what Honda had planned for the next year. I think that bike is the Ace Honda had up there sleave.
Actually David Bailey is the Ace, he made that bike fly!

The tank was for a lower COG and was equipped with a pump to get the gas back up to the carb.

Where does the lower tank line enter the carb? I know the picture of a picture isn't that great but on the original I can't locate a second line entering the carb. It shouldn't be a tee'd into the other line either if it has a pump on it. Leads me to believe that there is some sort of power jet. I'm glad Mike is getting a laugh out of the "AF" dispute. I thought it was rather ironic that honda in-fact had a bike with "AF" in the model designation more than a decade before it became cool.

You're getting your chain yanked. RC indicates this is a works bike. Not only were only a handful made, at the end of the season they were crushed to avoid falling into the hands of the other OEMs. Only a few still exist. This one I believe is in the AMA museum. I have seen Donnie Hansen's RC250 in person when they brought it to the event to raise money for David Bailey.

its my guess that why HRC was rolling his eyes..?

they dint build the bike as a product, to sell.
it was not a commericailly availible product marketed and sold under thier name. no ads, no model like that,
nor did they apply or register it, or want to..

it a facial tissue company made some prototype tissues and called those few boxes, Kleenix's, ,
but never released them ,advertised them ,or sold them under the name, it would not be a trademark of thier companies..,
thier facial tissue would be trademarked under whatever other name they decided to actuall use in commerce. (like CRtissues) ?

if ya'll want some hypothetical situation,
if Honda had made that bike as production model back then ,
but quit years ago , and no longer made the bike as a current model ,
while SH currently does in the marketplace ,
the trademark would be SH's regardless that situation as well.
read up on it if you find that kind of thing interesting?.

Honda CR, is thiersquite rightfully, as a dealer we can use it to a certain degree, but understandibly not for SH models.

well SH had a LE model in 2004 right?
the bikes basic *concept* was a 125 chassis,
with a different color.plastics different graphics , different color hardware etc, than the original red scheme.

Honda has some LE models this year? (its just two letters right?

Thats my point its like a cult over there,theres the admin/mods/sponser & regular members who are cool enough to hang,then theres everyone else.Did you notice all the comments came from members who spend most of the time on this site until AJ stepped up and said it was nice,then a few other members chimed in but they wern't even talking about the posted pic but about the husky 500,WTF,shit thats a classic peice of art,like you said one of a kind,if it had nothing to do "AF" I bet there would have been pages of comments and discussion

Back in the old days atleast in bike roadracing at the beginning of factory built GP bikes the frames were painted to look like there previous machines steel frames in hopes that the other factories would not notice the switch to AF.

What gets me with that trick for the time bike is why Honda still put a drum brake on it.
