Might be an impossible question to answer, but if you follow the settings on the chart in the manual for your temp and elevation......how close will these settings be to optimum?
I always thought you started there and then tuned dependent upon how the individual engine performed, but typically they are pretty damn close, no?
Am I off base here, because this has always seemed fairly simple to me, but I have to be missing something don't I?

Their close if you run 20:1 oil ratios.. most dont.
As you take away oil, your effectively "adding" fuel... making the bike richer.
If you stay with the chart, but jet 1 box leaner when running something like 40:1 oil ratio.... you'll be pretty close when running the PJ carb.
The PWK like to be even leaner still.....

Manuals are good for guidelines....and the chart I am reading says it is based off 32:1, so Bob are you saying that "Real World" wise these charts are actually based on the 20:1 ratio? It kinda clears a few things up that I have seen in the past if so.
I'm a simpleton....I am running 32:1 with 927 with the PJ. Runs great, but getting a little spooge at the exhaust port. Hardly worth messing with.
Never really thought about it, but my elevation and temps are probably close to what you folks in Cali are seeing. I do have humidity which affects things a great deal though.

1998 manual says 32:1. what you want to mix it at is your preference however. ive always mixed 32:1 and will continue to do so with gasoline anyways. from my experience with a stock motor, the manual will give you a very good running combination, it could probly be tweeked slighly for even better performance if you want to take the time to mess around with it. i tweeked mine slighly from what the manual suggested but not much. if your talking modified motor, the manual is of no help really

My advice is to treat the manual is a starting point for what will be conservative settings for sea level and 65F (check). The little chart is OK for reminding you that you'll need go leaner if it is significantly hotter and/or you are higher. (Humidity is an often over-looked factor.) Pre-mix ratio does have a limited effect compared to the other factors. I am humble enough to say that I can only detect gross changes in jetting and lean on others to get "in the ball-park" and then make very selective changes from what works in practice.
