finally, almost finished!!!

Post by dahondaboy »

I finally got the motor finished and fired up tonite. 3rd hard kick and it came to life, a few seconds later puking green all over. i had forgotton to tighten the big hose. fixed that and fired it again, sounds alright needs to be jetted a little but its close. im just happy as hell to hear it run again after a total rebuild. i must say these motors arent that hard to do the bottom end in. its kinda like a chev 350, in that anyone can do it!

well i grew up riding oldies like yz 465-490's and before that i did hare scrambles and desert raced a bultaco 370, so compared to those its a dream bike, i personally like the 88's conventional forks to the upside downers for desert riding. it feels so much cushier than the new af's.

no one wants the '88-'89 cranks, so the dealers sell them for like $212 brand new... I was planning on buying one before I got the rod kit with bigjays motor.
if you think about it a rod kit is like $80-$100 and to have it installed is like $100-$120.
anyway, glad you got it going, and yes these things are super simple to split the cases on... no need to fear the tiny parts flying out!

yeah, the cases arent my worry its the fact that i already did it a few weeks ago now i gotta get new gaskets and all that assembly time.
this has a new pro x rod in it so i just hope it will last a few bores before i gotta do it again. i paid 178.00 shipped so i dont think its too bad. i just hope i can get at least 120 out of the short one. why does no one want the 88-91 cranks? are they faulty

its 88-89 only, and they are lighter... not good for trail riding, better for a built machine.
Yeah, I spray copperspray-a-gasket on the base, head and center case gaskets, it helps them seal better and transfer heat better, but also helps gaskets come off in one peice and in a pinch or a never run motor, I would just respray them and reuse them as long as none of the mating parts were changed.
